c20 - k30, sb - bb engine crossmember?

Ive got a 72 c20 being converted to a 1 ton 4x4, I'm wondering if a stock 4x4 engine crossmember and motor mounts will work for my 2wd frame and a 402BB, and if a stocker does work what are my options? k10, k20, 67 through 72? A picture would be great too.

if anyones curious its going to be 402/sm465/np205 dana 60 front 14bolt rear on 39.5 swampers with about 12" of lift

I got a 402 on a stock 72 4x4 cross member using sbc motor mounts.

It will work with the frame, but you might have clearance issues with the oil pan. Some times they have a nasty habit of rubbing a hole in the oil pan with big blocks.

CrashEd,

I've got a 72 4x4 with a 350 in it now. I'm thinking about installing a 454 I'm cleaning up.

Is there a good chance that it'll bolt up. I was never sure but I gathered there may be a difference in the towers/mounts.

Re: c20 - k30, sb - bb engine crossmember?

I believe it will work with some holes drilled as the motor sits farther back in a 4wd than a 2wd but there will be other clearance issues with the big block such as valve covers, and distributor hitting the firewall.Just something to be aware of.And with some motor mounts the oil pan does rub the crossmember. There is some aftermarket ones that will work and allow more room though.

Re: c20 - k30, sb - bb engine crossmember?

Dustin,

All good points! I saw some older posts about headers that'll work with a BB as well. Seems some needed some clearance to get past the frame and other didnt.
If plans work out I'll have the front clip off at the time I attempt this. That should make it a little easier.

Here is the DIY4x engine crossmember for a 67-72 4wd.I'd say it allows clearance under the oil pan for those with big bocks-Linky

Nice stuff and for 165 bucks. You can hardly bet that.

Re: c20 - k30, sb - bb engine crossmember?

I used all of the stock cross member but bought new SBC motor mounts that bolt to the block. It all fit in but its real tight i figure about 1and 1/2 inch to two inch blocks will set it up to clear the valve covers and hei good. I can get my finger between the cross member and the oil pan all around it and i thought it would be plenty of room. I just pulled the 350 out and dropped the 402 in with no mods other than replacing the big block motor mounts with the small block ones and i have been driving it around like that, But i will have to put the body lift blocks in before any mud runs for sure.

Are you running headers or cast exhaust?

I have one of those coming for my C30 to K30 conversion. I'll be running a Big Block Cadillac.

Heh, I am using those as well... I am building two trucks using a lot of their stuff. It's cheaper than I could make it.
