rear bumper brackets

who really knows their rear bumper brackets?i'm replacing the rear bumper.when i bought it someone had put on a suburban/blazer bumper which was cool.but, the step pad had become scratched and ugly and i couldn't find a new replacement pad anywhere.so,i decided to go with a stock fleetside no strip bumper.while removing the burb bumper i found it was only really held on by 4 bolts on the outers only.i'm missing the inner brackets.my question is does anybody know if burb/blazer brackets are different than trucks because the bottom hole on the brackets on my truck dont seem to match the new truck bumper.i'd have to try and suck it in with about a 3 inch bolt.the burb bumper has some brackets bolted to it on backside i can't figure either.i'm thinkin i'll just have 4 bolts.the outers, holding it on,unless i find some truck brackets which must be different.although they list burb/blazer/fleetside as having same bumper.

Re: rear bumper brackets

same bumper, different brackets.
at least for me on my 86.
I bit the bullet and bought some inner brackets for fleetside truck off classic parts, or somewhere, were like $10 cheaper each rather than lmc.
And it was gm parts.
Link for parts breakdown:
http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cc/0023.asp

brackets I needed:
http://www.classicparts.com/prodinfo.asp?number=65-381
no pic, but it's exactly what I needed.

I just got a sportbumper also. I fabbed up my own rear brackets so I could put the bumper closer to the bed.

Re: rear bumper brackets

I am not sure but it looks like your brackets may be from a 81-87 suburban and the bumper is 73-80 . That is probably why the lower bolt is in so far . Just a thought . By the way , I bought the last pair of center brackets from the dealership at about 40 dollars each side . Frank

Re: rear bumper brackets

Those are the blazer/Burb inners. The pickup inner outers look basically like this:

You should be able to use the OUTER brackets from a Sub/Blazer for your truck as long as they are coming from the same year (design). The brackets and bumper you are showing are different years. I pulled my brackets from a Sub as well... but could only use the outer brackets. I was also able to use the license tag holder and light assemably as well.
Thanks,
Anthony

yup,i think the outer shown on my truck will work.i had the new one on there once.the bottom hole on the shown burb brackets on my truck is what i think is different.it is offset back towards front of the truck.i would put some sort of spacer or washers to fill the bolt gap.but,i'd like the stainless bumper bolts.i'm not sure if they make a long one.plus,i'm not sure if the burb brackets place the bumper in the same postion as truck brackets.it seems to low.i'll post a pic later.gotta go see the doc about my so called surgically repaired back this morning.i'm hoping pcmcobra or grande rojo post a pic or plan on how they did their brackets.if i could have found a brand new step pad for the burb bumper that would have been cool.

Re: rear bumper brackets

The outers are the same on Burbs, Blazers and fleetside Pickups. The inners are different on Burb/Blazer vs Fleetside vs Stepside.

I would go out and take some pics, but I am still at work, and when I get home, packing for vacation and leaving in the morning.
If I do get some time this evening I will.

Re: rear bumper brackets

Tucking the bumper in makes a big difference!! The only problem, is that us HD leaf truck owners cant just slot & slide the bumper brackets forward due to the rear hanger getting in the way...more mods are necessary to make it work.

You guys should have shaved your bumper bolts while you were at it.

all i did was take the factory ones, that only had a hole and slotted it,like the pics of the ones capnkaos posted.i just drilled a hole next to the other and filed it out.also was able to take about a half inch of the leading edge of the bracket, which allowed me to slide it in forward that much.on the brackets pictured you wouldn't be able to do that.doesn't look like there's enough to spare by the slots.all totaled i gained an 1 and half.don't know why you can't see my pic's,everybody else can?hope that helps

Re: rear bumper brackets

Found this thread from awhile back and was thinking of putting one on my c10. Would bolting the bumper with only the outer brackets be alright or are the inner brackets totally necessary? The thing is i got a rear crossmember welded on the rear frame for strength and the inner brackets won't bolt up. Anybody else got pics of a suburban bumper tucked in a little.
