Window Regulator ?

My pass. side window is a real *itch to get up. I bent the handle today, folded it in half. It was a cheap "Help" replacement. Is it the crank mechanism that's bad or the channels? Can I just lube up the channels? Or is better to just replace the assembly?

Re: Window Regulator ?

airdale, the windows on my 68 GMC that sat for several years was the same way. I removed the panel and used silicon spray on the rubber parts and spray wd49 lubricant on all the other moving parts and that helped.

I intend to take the parts out and clean and restore them with new channels, etc. at a later time. Hopefully yours aren't bent or broken.

Re: Window Regulator ?

A good cleaning and lube job on the regulators can do wonders..

I have a couple of old rear view mirrors I keep in the tool box as "inspection" mirrors. You can use those to really look over the regulators to see what type of shape they are in, and it will help you to determine if you need to replace, or if a quick fix up will be just what you were looking for..

Good Luck!

Re: Window Regulator ?

My best guess would be that the nylon rollers (3) are shot and need replacing.

So that would be part of the regulator assembly?

Re: Window Regulator ?

Yes, they are part of the assembly. You can buy them separately but I think you'd be better off by replacing the regulator.

Re: Window Regulator ?

OK, Thanks! I'll try some lube, with the expectations of purchasing a new regulator.

Re: Window Regulator ?

My windows made an ear-splitting squeal when i would roll them up. I put a couple of fingers of grease on the gear-mechanisms and it helped things out. They can still be a pain to roll up sometimes if you get in a hurry- but I don;t want to mess with replacing the regulators. Seems like a real cuss-fest to me.

Re: Window Regulator ?

Good news! I sprayed some WD-40 in there and it loosened them up considerably. I sprayed everything but I think where it worked was, about 4 inches toward the rear of the crank. there's an indentation in the door but no mounting screws. I think it's where the channels all come together. Anyway much appreciate the advice.

Re: Window Regulator ?

Now that you have them loosened up, coat them well with spray-on white lithium grease (then clean your window glass!)- I think you'll like the results!

Good idea! I was thinking the WD-40 might not last.

(then clean your window glass!)

Re: Window Regulator ?

WD-40 is not the best to use for lube (its for water displacement hence WD) it turn sticky after a while.
My advice if you ever replace the regulator is to get a working origional one, the aftermarket ones suck.
Like I said most of the time replacing the nylon rollers will make it as good as new.
