Where to go to shorten my rear axel?

Well, I have to shorten my rear end almost 6". I knew i had to shorten it but 6" caught me way off guard. So i was hoping to get some guidance. Where should i go to get it shortened? Also what do you think it might cost? Is there anything i should make sure they do or is it a pretty simple job. Thanks ahead of time.

You need to "narrow" the rear axle housing and shafts, right?Like what Currie Enterprises does? What`s up with your truck?Tell more about it.What bed do you have? What points did you measure from on truck and axles(tires)? What tires and wheels do you have?12-bolt coil rear?

Re: Where to go to shorten my rear axel?

I would get some quotes on what it will cost.It may be cheaper to buy a narrowed rear from "Currie" or someone.

Yeah i am needing the narrow the overall width of my rear end. Well i just got my fleetside bed and i measured the inside of the bed where my tires are going to be tucking into which measured 71.5". So then i when to my rear end with rims and tires on and measured that. It came out to 77.25". That is how i came up with the 6". I bought a set of Foose nitrous wheels. I wanted the deepest offset they offered which was a 20x10 wheel with a 4.5" backspace or a 5". I don't remember exactly what it was. I have a 12bolt rear end. I had the rear axels redrilled to 5x4.75 bolt pattern to fit the wheels. I think i answered all of your questions.

I would like to stay with a 12bolt because i already have rear disc brakes and don't want to redrill the rear axels again unless that is my only option. Does anyone know if there is any cars with a 5x4.75 bolt pattern that i might be able to take the rearend off and make it work? Thanks for your help.

Re: Where to go to shorten my rear axel?

Before i go and modify my rear end, do you know where i can find widths of other 12bolts for other cars? Maybe i will be able to just swap my rear end for a narrower one and maybe save a few bucks.

Thanks
Josh

Camaro 10/12 bolts from 67-79 or Nova's through 72 would be a good place to start looking.

6" does seem like alot though (3" ea side). If you're trying to ensure the outer edge of the wheel/tire clears the inner bed structure, remember it will have a visual impact.

My truck would also use a 4.5 ~ 5"BS on a 10" wheel. 3" each side would pull the wheel/tire combo in too far & give it the 'over-narrowed' look you sometimes see on custom cars. I suggest getting the bed installed & aligned on the frame & roll the wheel/tire combo underneath. Set them up so they look like what you want (spacing vs. the body panels) & measure for the proper axle width.

Re: Where to go to shorten my rear axel?

i am going to narrow my housing myself and from what i have seen of your work you would have no problem doing it too. just take your time and make a good jig to keep everything straight. as for the axles a friend told me they could be resplined for around 150 but i dont now for sure i thought the splined end was bigger than the shaft i have not taken them out yet so i dont know for sure. by the way i love everything you have done so far, it was your build thread that convinced me to build my own chassis. so thanks and keep up the good work!
