tachometer hook up question -

I put a HEI dizzy in my truck, and want to hook up a stock repro tach, but was not sure where the brown wire goes. Does it go in the connection where it says tach on the picture below?

Re: tachometer hook up question -

Do I need to put a different connector on it, and would any auto parts store have it?

Yeah you'll need a different connector. Look at the one you have for power going to the dizzy and thats the one you'll need. You can get them anywere parts stores, hardware stores and maybe even wally world. Easy to do, cut the wire by the old one, strip the wire, place the conector and it and crimp it.

Re: tachometer hook up question -

That connector went on one of the terminals of the stock tach. An ordinary female spade connector will connect into the distributor cap. Any auto store will have one. Clip of the old and crimp on the new. I'd assume the brown wire is the signal wire for the tach.

Re: tachometer hook up question -

Dont forget heat shrink and if it will fit up in there Id put a shielded female adapter on it. Its just got plastic that protects the outside from making contact with anything incase..

Re: tachometer hook up question -

hmm...it doesn't seem to fit on the other side...could it be a different connector? I just got back from 4 auto parts stores and no one has one...

Re: tachometer hook up question -

i got mine from the motormite help sectoin it was one for the two prong gm voltage regulator replacement for the internally regulated, you will have to remove the locking tab but when installed it stays put.

Re: tachometer hook up question -

Dan I have them here for $8 shipped, it is the correct conector with the correct color wire with it to splice in under the dash so no need for shrinking as it will be inside the cab not exposed to that much moisture. No parts stores carry's them that I know of(or at least where I live) so I found a place that makes them and bought a bunch of them to sell with my dashes. I can get a pic if needed...Randy

Re: tachometer hook up question -

Here are the pics of it, just cut the brown signal wire under the dash and butt splice and some good electrical tape,(see below)this to it inside the truck, and simply plug it in at the dizzy and you are done, looking totally stock
Heat shrinking is the preferred method, but you can just use good electrical tape like
3M eletrical scotch 33 prefered, small rolls availible at Home D for about $2-3
DO NOT use the cheap tape found at parts houses and local mini marts,
it is mostly vinyl and will not hold up very long and gets very brittle in a short period of time.

Re: tachometer hook up question -

Byrd, is the connector really that different? I used a standard female spade and it seems to work fine...?

Re: tachometer hook up question -

Bill, no an insulated female spade lug will do just fine, however it is not as pleasing to the eye as this one is and plus it matches the correct HEI 12 volt connector. I had just the female lug on mine for over 2 yrs and hated it because it looked so cheesy right beside the 12 volt connector.
