Frame Questions

I am going to be boxing the frame in on dad's truck in the next few weeks and my question is to you guys out there that are putting together 47-54's right now. I have to weld in nuts to attach items to and I am not sure what all mounts to the frame. I know I need to do something for the battery box and also I need to make clearence for the bed mounting bolts but what else? If anyone can think of something let me know.

Thanks Bernie

Re: Frame Questions

Depending on how far back you plan to box the frame, you may need to look at mounts for a rear mounted tank if you plan to do that.

Re: Frame Questions

running board mounts mostly. MY frame is boxed front to back, literly bumper bracket to bumper bracket and I just used crush sleeves for my running board mounts but I really should have used nuts welded on the back.

This is unless you still have them rivoted on....

Re: Frame Questions

Cajun, There are still riveted on but we were thinking about cutting them loose so that we clean up behind them. If I do then I will weld in some nuts. Am I correct about the bed mounts? I was thinking about drilling a hole in the bottom frame rail so that I could snake a socket in there to tighten the nuts. I don't remember how that bed mounts. I am guessing that the crossmember that is to the front of the bed/rear of cab need to come out also. It looks like the only thing it does is to mount the e-brake stuff on? Anyway thanks.

Bernie

DPowell, I already have the tank mounts in but thanks for reminding me about that. I still need to weld the brackets before boxing.

I dount know about the bedmounts as I have a completely custom bed and mounting system.

Are you talking about the big crossmember with the triangular plates on it? If so leave that in because thats where the whole stock frame gets its strength.

Re: Frame Questions

Yeah that's the one. I have a new crossmember that is going to go in it's place so it will replace the strength issue.

Re: Frame Questions

On my 54 frame I cut holes in the boxing plate prior to welding them in so I could access bed mounting points and to permit access to wiring and fuel lines run inside the frame.

There are some pictures of this on the following link.

Thanks for the photos.
What type of fuel filter did you use with the 3/8" american threads?

Re: Frame Questions

The filter is either a Fram or a Wix unit I picked up at the Friendly Local Auto Parts Store (FLAPS). I wrote the p/n down in the build book but do not have that handy at the moment.

Re: Frame Questions

I will look in the Wix book to see if I can find a American thread one 3/8". if you find the part number let me know what it is.
