6 cyl/ 5 speed combination questions

Yes this is the same post as before. Only this time it has a less vague title to it. Here is the original post.

Basically I want to know what the best and easiest route to go to put a 5 speed trans behind a 250 I6

I thought about that when I still had my 6. Best bet is find a 5-speed from a full sized 88 and up C1500. You'll need to rig up a hydraulic clutch, and either get an adapter to make the electronic sensor work the manul spoodo or change to an after market speedometer.

You'll also need an automatic style tranny cross member. I never got all my parts for it, before I went V8/automatic on mine, so I just had the plans, just not the finished product. It should be a very good combo behind the inline 6.

MV,

I put a new Tremec 5 speed behind my 250 in my '67. It goes in like butter and gets 20+ MPG. It's bullitproof and can handle up to 500 HP. (In case I decide to add another 400 HP) . Downside . . . $2700 cost. i love it though.

Palf70Step, That was what I was originally wanting to do. But some people on here said the t-5 would work better. I think the full size truck tranny would be a better choice if it fits just in case i want to ever pull something with my truck.

I put a T5 behind my 292 and it made my C20 an entirely different truck! A 3.3 first gear to a .73 fifth gear, and it's fun to drive now.
Tom Langdon put the trans together out of a Camaro box, Mustang gears, and a Sonoma tail-shaft to bring the shifter forward of the seat.

I didn't have to cut anything. I did have to push the pilot bearing all the way into the flywheel bore, (you can cut the pilot bushing down to 5/8" thickness without sacrificing any integrety,) and I had to turn a narrow spacer (bushing) to fit between the T5 bearing retainer housing and the bell housing hole. The bell housing bolt holes want to be opened up to 1/2" and grade 8 bolts/nuts and lock washers installed, but over all not a big problem-swap. The driveshaft had to be shortened, but overall a very worthwhile mod!
