Question mechanical or electric fuel pump??????

My fuel pump decided to go out yesterday and I'm still working on all the wiring and inside the dash. The guy that I bought the truck from has only put about 3 hour on the engine. The problem that I'am having is should I go back with a mechanical pump or step to an electric. I have a holley 750 double pumper with a air gap intake. Give me you ideas please!

Re: mechanical or electric fuel pump??????

Hard to beat a good ole mechanical pump and they don't fail too often.....got one feeding my 500+ hp 383.

If ya get an electrical one, spend the money and buy a good one. Another nice thing about an electric pump is you can wire a switch to it and hide it......nice theft deterrent.

Re: mechanical or electric fuel pump??????

My brother in laws Z that I am storing has an electric pump. I really don't care for it. It's very loud even with it being mounted under the back of the car. When you're sitting at a stop light with your blinker on you can hear the engine idling up and down with the electrical load of the blinkers. It will be getting a mechanical pump again soon.

Re: mechanical or electric fuel pump??????

I went electric once ( a red holley to be precise...) and I couldn't get the mechanical one back on there quick enough. Big time PITA, not to mention the noise gets a little irritating.

Re: mechanical or electric fuel pump??????

if you go electric you have to put a regulator on it and it think it is 5 to8 PSI but don't quote those numbers. I have seen regulators cheap on ebay

I have yet to hear a good reason to go with an electric pump.

Re: mechanical or electric fuel pump??????

if you can feel a 1/2 a horse from the drivers seat, you need to hire yer hide out to NASA.
Just my opinion, but I'll bet a kick in the daddy parts that you'd never feel the loss in power, nor would you see it in MPH or ET on a drag strip.
And remember, the power to run the electric pump comes from somewhere... it takes power to run the alt, and the more load you are putting on it, the more power it takes to turn it. Ever notice the wife's honda bog down when the electric fan kicks on at the stop light?

Re: mechanical or electric fuel pump??????

Mechanical would be a simple swap out. And some times it is good to Keep It Simple.

I was gonna go mechanical, but my engine was a replacement TBI crate motor that came out of a wrecked Suburban. I pulled the block off plate to install the mechnical pump, and found that the block was not machined all the way into the crankcase for the push rod.

So I ended up with a Jeg's inline electric pump setup for a carb. If I ever convert to fuel injection, I guess this will give me a head start on the plumbing.

Just my .02..
I have a Holley Blue and LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! I put a 454 in my Jimmy and the mechanical pump was too close to the frame rail. I have only put about 2,000 miles on this set-up but it has performed flawless. I also have upgraded to a one wire alternator, so there is no fluctuation in voltage. I can hear the hmmm of the pump, but hard to notice over loud pipes and 37" swampers.

Fuel injection

Agree, though - unless you're in the very rarified air where 110 GPH won't feed the beast I can't think of any reason in the world.
