73-87 beds

I have a 79' chevy that is in dire need of an 8' bed. I have single tanks. Can someone tell me what year beds are a direct bolt on for this 79'? as in bolt arrangement and gas tank fillers and tank door shapes etc??? The truck is a fairly clean original but needs a rust free bed to be really nice. I am trying to find out before the truck goes to the paint shop next week. Thanks, Matt

The square fuel door was introduced in 1978.

Re: 73-87 beds

I believe the bolt arangement for the first 2 bolts near the cab changed in 1977, but it depend on what style door you have, or if you want to go to the newer style.

Re: 73-87 beds

My 73 doesnt even have a fuel door, just a round cap on the side of the bed.

Re: 73-87 beds

As stated before, 78 was the transition year. I had a 78 Silverado that had the standard cap but I also have seen some with the doors. Keep the fuel doors, there are your best friend...especially since you are getting new paint.

X2

Is there a trick to not running over with the round caps? Other than 'knowing' how much fuel you need and stopping it .5 gal shy?

Re: 73-87 beds

I PM'd stepside454 about my bed off my crew cab. It is rust free and is about 2 hours from St. Louis. It's a dual tank bed with gas doors. It has a few small dents and a few drilled holes in the bed rails from tool boxes or camper shells. Still on truck,... if interested PM me.
