HEI wiring question-will this work? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My son and I installed an ACCEL HEI unit yesterday with new wires and plugs. Have it all set up except the 12 volt wire to the distributor. I know we have to change the old resistor wire. Can we connect a 12 guage wire to a small piece of the old wire at the firewall or do we have to run the new wire from the fuse block? We appreciate your help.

It's better to completely eliminate the resister wire and go direct.

all you need is a switched 12 volt wire to the HEI

get rid of the resistor

I recommend an inline fuse also. Dont take a chance losing your truck over a $1 fuse...

what i've always done is trace the resistor wire back thu the harness to the firewall pulled the connector out of the firewall mounted terminal block and used that for my feed (correct terminals available at napa)then i've rewrapped the harness that goes accross the firewall for a nice clean factory looking job with no addon wires and no excess dangling wires

Another really easy process is just to take a 12G wire with a female spade on it and connect to the IGN UNFD connector on the fuse box, route it out through the firewall with the rest of the wires, across the wire channel at the top of the firewall and right down into the distributor. Nice, clean and easy.

Run a 16G green wire at the same time for your future tach

Thanks guys, always a big help. We ran the wire straight to the fuse block and it fired right up. Adjusted the timing by ear for now. What should the timing be set at for a 283? Idles so much smoother with the HEI.

You'll want to open up your spark plug gaps a bit to .045.
