New to the forum
Hello everybody. I found the site while looking for parts for my new to me Blazer. A little history, my first vehicle was a 71 GMC Stepside. lowered. All through high school I owned and worked on 67-72 trucks, the best looking body style hands down. I had a 72 blazer, 350 pro jection(for a while) 4speed, 33's. Sold it because I'm not very smart. My best truck was a 72 SWB that I bagged, roll pans, it was bad. Once again because I'm not smart I sold it years ago.
I bought a 72 blazer about a month ago. It needs the usual rocker and floor work but overall very solid. 15k on a goodwrench rebuilt 350. I'm planning on getting the body in decent shape, fabbing some bumpers, a couple inches of lift. It will mainly be a hunting and wheeling rig, maybe a plow. Now for the Questions. I need to know of a way tofigure out the gear ratio. If it's not what I'm looking for what year axles are compatible? It has a three on the tree manual trans. Is a sm 465 a direct swap? I found a single wall top but it's missing a side window. Are the double wall windows the same? I'm sure I'll need some help but I think I found the right place. Thanks Jared in CO |

Welcome you definatly came to the right place. Ways to figure out the gear ratio. 1. Pull the cover off the diff and find the ratio stamped on the ring gear. or 2. with the rear of the vehicle off the gound mark the drive shaft, turn the rear wheel 1 rotation and count the drive shaft revolutions.
Ex. If you turn the rear wheel 1 and the drive shaft turns 3x you have a 3.07 or 3.08 rear gears

Yeah, it should bolt right in. I think the old bellhousing will even work with 465. you might need a different adapter for the transfer case though i'm not sure, someone else should know that for you.

Welcome to the board. When I was contemplating swapping an SM465 in place of my three speed manual I had a few people tell me the bellhousing opeining for the tranny was slightly different sizes. I ended up doing a totally different swap so I never found out if that was correct. Just something for you to keep in mind.
In relation to the axle ratio question, I believe if you have an open differential you will need to turn the wheel two revolutions to determine the ratio. Best option is to go ahead and pull the cover. That way you are positive and can put in fresh lube while your at it.
