Re: tilt column?

I'd sell the T/A one on e-bay, and get one out of a 72 - 81 van.
Check out the FAQ, there's a lot about installing one. It's not quite a direct fit.. .but pretty close.

Re: tilt column?

I found that a lot of vans with round headlights have columns that work. Problem with a newer tilt is all the junk (wipers, ignition, cruise, high beams etc...) that are built into the column. The van tilts have a splined shaft that stops just outside the column while your stock one has a long shaft that extends to the rag joint. You just have to make or buy a piece to connect the van tilt to you rag joint.

Re: tilt column?

The truck columns have a intermediate shaft that comes off on both the column, and rag joint ends Mike. That piece on the van column that connects the column to the rag joint (no intermediate shaft on the vans) comes off and then its just splines like the regular truck column and slides into the regular truck intermediate shaft,or atleast it did on mine. The van column is longer so you have to collapse the shaft in some so it works though.I'm using a late 70s van tilt.Check the FAQ,there is some threads on converting a van tilt to work in a truck

Re: tilt column?

I would assume a T/A guy, or a Camaro guy would love to have it... I know I hate getting in and out of 3rd gens w/out tilt.

that's amazing... my van tilt is the same length as my non-tilt truck column...33" or so and the non-tilt truck is made with a longer shaft and not an intermediate.... the longer shaft does have another shaft (intermediate?) with a shear pin but that is 12" or so longer than the van. Yep, just checked the garage since I have about 4 different shafts lying around.

main point is, people use van tilts, yes it's possible and yes it's cheaper than a real truck tilt.
