What about the 402?

I found one recently in a truck. It is missing the PS, alt, and water pump, the motor is otherwise complete. I dont know if it runs, or the condition of the inside. My questions:

What would you pay to pull it yourself? ballpark figure

What other components would I need to pull for a swap?

What is "not desireable" on the BBC?

What isn't compatible on the 402 that is common on the 454/502?

Anymore info ya'll have on this is appreciated!

Re: What about the 402?

The 402 is a factory modified 396 and parts are very plentiful.

Rebuild w/ mods for unleaded gas $3000-4000 if you have a shop do it.

I believe the 402 is a desirable engine and built like a brick out house.

IMO My $.02 Then again what do I know?

My 70cst has a factory 402 and it's going to stay a 402.

Re: What about the 402?

It depends on what you're swapping from, 6 cylinder, small block, etc.. to figure out what else needs to be pulled.

The only thing undesireable on my 402 is the gas mileage.

Not sure about the price, never bought one; mine came with it

Re: What about the 402?

I pulled one from a 71 impala a couple months ago, out of a pick a part and payed $135 for the long block. Don't bother with the intake and make sure it doesn't have peanut port heads. O and the 502s are a tall deck block. 454, 402 , 396 the light truck and pass car ones are are not.

It will be a swap from a SBC.

Re: What about the 402?

Ok heres some pics the small ones are peanut ports and the bigger ones are off some early 70 oval port heads. Peanut ports came on 70s to 90s 454 engines for low end torque and are too small to make any kind of power. There are also rectangle ports but thats a different thread.

Re: What about the 402?

So, 200-400$ would be a good deal, running or not? That is with me pulling it myself, on top of the 10hr road trip there and back ($60 in gas).

Re: What about the 402?

I would say $200-$300 would be a fair price. As posted, the peanut port heads are basically worthless. If it has Oval port heads look for casting #'s ending in 781 or 049, they are excellent flowing heads. The 402 crank and block are worth $200 by themselves. Good Luck.

Re: What about the 402?

Sorry to hijack this, but it seems finished anyway. Hey Omnivec, Where'd you get that cool micrometer and do they make them big enough to measure brake drum interiors? Thx. Brian

I Got that particular one off the Cornwell truck, but it only goes to 8". I bought one just like it without the hold from Autozone for $20.

Harbor Freight 6" Digital Caliper ... works GREAT for shop/mechanic work. Cheap too!

I have 3 sets of these ... one for the tool box, one for the work bench and one set i keep on my desk.

Re: What about the 402?

Here is mine...I have ordered a E-brock Proformer RPM manifold, Cam and lifters, Full roller rockers, and headers...I want some more power out of this thing....If that doesnt do it....The next step is heads. I like the BIG block though so far. I will update when everything gets installed.

Re: What about the 402?

The 402 is a good engine. I got better mpg with the stock 402 (13mpg) then most were getting with the 350. The small ovals are good for working engine, The big rectangle ports were the high 325-475hp. Even the stock 402 oval was rated at 235hp but it started so low in the rpm range that it was enough.
One other thing the 502 is still a standard deck height if it was a factory crate. Everything moves over from the 402 to the 502, Intake, distributor, brackets and transmission. I think the crate 572 is a tall deck.

Re: What about the 402?

I don't know what they're worth but I do know a lot of people run in to the extra cost of the accessories. Such as, all the brackets and pulleys. I would assume you are also going to pull the engine towers/mounts?

Re: What about the 402?

I am going to call the guy tomorrow about it. If he takes the offer, I am going to get everything I can. He gave me a good deal on some stuff before, so hopefully I will get the return customer discount.

Re: What about the 402?

I have a 402 in my 68. It can turn over my 18.5" mickeys no sweat.
It ran 10.6 in the 1/8 mile last year and I had a hard time getting the back end to grab.

If anyone has a burning desire for a 402 my will be for sale soon.
I am going with a wilder combination, cam, gear drive maybe.
It runs, burns a little oil on the drivers side exhaust.
The engine has been rebuilt before. It is a 72 vintage impala if I remember correctly. Has the Nodular Iron crank. I have pics of the bottom end of the motor + video of the motor running. No oil leaks, fresh rear main seal.
It will most likley go as a long block.

Thanks for letting me borrow your thread
