where can I buy a stock AC evaporator?

My mechanic told me my evaporator is plugged and wants me to find the replacement part so he can fix it. I checked all the on-line vendors I could find, even LMC doesn't sell that part. Any ideas on a vendor that might sell them?

Also, does anyone know the freon capacity for a stock 72 Chev truck AC system? Any help would be appreciated.

when i needed one about 7-8years ago my local radiator and ac shop got one// charge is i believe 3lbs of R12

I would think any good air shop or even a parts house should be able to get one. I have a late model 79 in my fire box housing. I sealed the rest up and swaped out to the acumalator and all on the 71.

Thanks for reminding me to check the obvious first. My local parts house has one left in their warehouse, if it's the right part; I need to go check it out first before ordering.

What do you think about an evaporator plugging up; are they prone to plugging, or does this sound like a guess? The mechanic is basing his opinion on the fact that no cold air is comming out and this part is icing up. Any thoughts?

It could be the TXV that's not working. Did he say where it was icing up? Usually where it is icing, is where there is restriction. IMO, I have never heard of a evaporator clogging up. But I guess it is possible.....

Hey 70, are you talking about the Expansion Valve (TXV)? I bought that part already and plan to have him install it too, but he thinks it's the evaporator just because that's where the ice is. The evaporator is $179.00, so if that's not likely it, I don't want to waste the money or time having to do it again with another part.

How does he know it's icing up inside the box. Has he took the evaperator out and checked it. If it's icing up it either got to much pressure in the system or the POA valve is stuck open and it's not cycling properly.
I have a hard time beleiving it is the evaperator but you never know.
If there is a lot of debri inside the box then yes it could freeze up because the air is blocked. I would take it apart myself and clean and flush it real good. Shoot some air threw it and see.

Maybe I'm calling the part by the wrong name. It's the 8" long in-line part outside of the AC box in the center of the photo. That's the part that's icing up and that's the part he says must be plugged. Are there any other parts that might be better candidates for the problem based on this part freezing up and no cool air coming out the vents?

POA valve is the part. I would change over to a acumlator and the inline filter. It slids into the bottom line and put the acumalator right out of the box as in my thread. I love this new system. This is my thread on the system I installed myself.
