bogging at 50mph

this is a odd symptom that happened last week and i have no clue what it could be.

230 inline6


truck starts perfectly, idles perfectly and runs perfectly, up until 50mph. once i pass 50, the truck jerks almost like a fuel problem. jerks back and forth hard. if i take my foot off of the gas immediately, i can keep it running once the speed drops. if i keep the gas steady it will die, but starts up right away and idles again perfectly. below 50, i can floor the pedal without any bogging.

i noticed a torn up alternator belt, so i replaced that. did not fix the issue.

i am clueless. any ideas?

This may not be it, but...when mine does that, it's been the fuel filter.

I had a similar problem with mine and it was because the fuel pump suction hose was collapsing.

I vote fuel filter or fuel pump.

I have so much junk in my tank that I have to run an inline and in-carb filter. It's the in-carb filter that needs changing when mine does this.

thanks everyone. i was thinking fuel also, but the way it runs at low speed (below 50) threw me trough a loop. i do not have an inline, so i will check the screen in the carb and replace the suction hose. i guess this ethanol fuel is finally starting to clean my tank and screw things up.

try taking your gas cap off. it could be your cap isnt venting properly//could also be the intank filter screen on the fuel pickup

are you running E-85? That may be the problem right there.
On a side note... you probably have a 250, not a 230... unles you swapped out for it, the 230 wasn't installed in these trucks.

Could be a float problem, at high speeds your float bowl could be running dry.
No gas = bogging, a little gas = power, no gas = etc... jerking back and forth
Carb rebuilds for these 6 cyl are very cheap ($10 or less) and very simple.
Plus it gives you an opportunity to clean 40 years of gunk out of there.

my truck use to do the same thing and i could never figure out what it was... then i put in a v-8 and havent had the problem.... i wish my 250 was still in there!

Check you plug wires too, make sure they are not arching.

I drove a, please excuse my French, Dodge 880 in convoy through Texas and Arkansas one summer. On the way back it was quite hot by the way. Same symptoms and it turned out to be a fuel filter keeping enough gas from getting to the fuel bowl at higher RPMs. Basically the engine would drain the carb dry.

yeah put a inline filter on that bad boy somehwere. i had to put 20 on my 49 coupe..worekd like a charm..
i also had some valve problems on my 235 at one point. they were adjusted wrong. if the filter doesnt work, try adjusting the valves.

you'll need to flow ~20% more fuel at speed; if the carb isn't set up for E85, it's not gonna happen.
