trailer brake control wiring
I have a 2001 silverado 1500. I was trying to wire a trailer brake control with a plug in harness I got from a trailer hitch place. I they gave me the wrong harness and the controller wouldn't work. I checked the pins where it plugs in under the dash and moved the wires in the harness plug to the correct location. I am no longer getting power from the brake light pin from the plug under the dash. It was working before I pluged in the harness now I get nothing. I checked all the fuses in both fuse panels and all are good. My brake lights still work. Everthing else still seems to work. The brake controler works when I move the lever but it gets no signal from the brake light wire. Is there some kind of relay some where for this wire that I might have burnt up when it was wired wrong? Any help would be appreciated. I have already spent hours trying to track this down.
Thanks, Brent |

Re: trailer brake control wiring
I'm not positive on this but it should have a fuse in the box under the hood! All the wires to the seven pin on the back are fused in the box under the hood! Did you check them with a meter? If you haven't got this fixed let me know and I'll try to find out for sure!

Re: trailer brake control wiring
Check the fuse box mounted on the left inner fender marked stud 1 under the hood. There should be a fake or filler fuse in the 40 amp square fuse hole. The real one should be up at the front of the fuse box, switch them out if you haven't already.

Re: trailer brake control wiring
If that isn't it take a look at this online tech article on istalling a brake controller.

Re: trailer brake control wiring
Thanks for the replies. I hadn't checked back here for a while. I checked the fuses in the panel on the fender under the hood. They all checked good. I installed the one for the power for the brake control and I had to hook the pigtail to the post there. I never did find out why I am not getting signal from the brake light switch. I just ended splicing that wire directly into the wire coming out of the brake light switch and everthing works as it should now.
