For those that have done NV4500 swaps

I'm in the middle of doing mine in a 72 K20 with a NP205 and GM HT383 crate engine. The question I have is regarding the crossmember. Advance Adapters sent a 2.5" square piece of tubing that the bottom of the tranny bolts to and then has the right holes to bolt to the crossmember.

I guess my question is do I use the tubing, then bolt to the stock rubber mounts (I bought new polurethane ones). It does this fine, but I am wondering if this raises the tranny too much for the driveline and/or mounting the cab.

Has anyone actually done this in a 67-72 GM truck? If so, what did you do?

Re: For those that have done NV4500 swaps

If I hadn`t just sold my CheyenneSuper,I`d go out and give you a top of crossmember to floor measurement since the motor was out of it.I wonder if they would have you solid mount it.I`d think not. But,I can see that adding that tube would change alot in height. Is this an adaptor for the trans mount,so you are using the factory crossmember?I wondered if the made a conversion cross member for this swap.
I`ll see what measurements I can get from my manual K/20.I`d think if an adapter is needed at the croosmember mount that they would have made it from plate to avoid altering the alignment as much as possible.

Re: For those that have done NV4500 swaps

Yeah, the directions for the conversion that they give are totally useless...
I can't tell if it is to use as a solid mount or just as a spacer and then to bolt to the rubber ones. The bottom of the transmission where it bolts to has been modified to take the tubing, so I'm not sure. Guess I will just have to call in the morning.
Thanks!

Re: For those that have done NV4500 swaps

did you speak to a rep when you made your order? AA stocks trans mounts specific to your factory x-member and/or a custom x-member with mount if you would prefer, but i did not take them up on this offer. i mounted my trans mount to a small piece of c-channel. i can go measure it, but i would think what you received is the spacer between the x-member and trans mount and not an actual hard mount. that trans mount fits pretty high up in there.

I think you're right. The more I look at it, the more it looks correct, just hard to judge since it's just a frame with an engine and tranny in there, so it all looks high. It all fit together pretty well, so we'll have to see

Re: For those that have done NV4500 swaps

over all you'll like the final assemby and that trans is great in all applications. using both the bell and t-case adapter adds a little length to the assembly which positions the trans shifter nicely in relation to the driver; however, if you are using a bench or buddy bucket the t-case shifter may be tight when shifted in 4hi.

Re: For those that have done NV4500 swaps

Do you have any pics of your setup? I'm trying to get the transfer case shifter attached and they gave no instructions to how the linkage extender attaches. I think I have it figure out but it interferes with some bolts on the tranny, so I just want to make sure. Also, I was going to write a new post, but I'll ask you here... Do you know where I can get the bolt that attaches the transfer case shifter to the transfer case linkage? I think I left it on the tranny and adapter I sold to special K. LMC doesn't appear to have it and I know it is a special bolt.
Thanks,
-Tim

Re: For those that have done NV4500 swaps

Rust, sorry but i do not have any pics of my truck or the build. i'll get with it and post some on the site soon. Our combos are a little different. I am running a custom 205 casing that was circular drilled to the 6 bolt pattern so the case mounts directly to the tran's tailshaft. i did this to eliminate the 10 spline coupler and adapter. I installed a 32 spline input gear in the t-case which engages the trans output shaft directly. but eliminating the adapter lead me to need a different stick linkage too. However, much to my surprise when i purchased my trans and case it came with a free ORD twin stick by mistake. Lucky me! so i made a bracket for the sticks to pivot off and am using heim joints for my shifter linkage assembly. this completed set up allowed my t-case shifter to sit further forward since the lack of adapter saved me a couple of inches, and i shortened the rods for the hiems so the sticks point forward a bit allowing more clrearance between 4hi and the bench seat. The only draw back to the way I set this up is that the trans boot and beauty ring im using (from a '99+ Chevy) is way to big and interfears with the nice twin stick boot from ORD. I moved these shifters inboard a bit to keep them away from the passenger side floor but ran into this problem so i just need to get creative.
Sorry this isn't helping you much, but good luck with your project! If you like rowing the gears then you'll really love that transmission. -steve

Re: For those that have done NV4500 swaps

Great thread on this subject currently running over on CK5, check it out, might help.

It's for a doubler set up but maybe there's something you could get out of it, here's the link anyway.
