is it worth buying a Used 454 Big block motor

I found a 454 Motor dont really know the history of it .
# 10069286 i belive its a 4 bolt mark IV Short Deck year 90-91
think he wants 800 for the motor and says he has the motor mount bracket that will cost me extra.
its almost complete minus the Carb.

would this be worth buying or should i play it safe and buy a crate motor.

$800 is a little stout for a rebuilder if you do not know what the internals look like. You need to look at the head codes, if they are "peanut port" heads they are not very good for any high rpm use or resale value.
If you can hear the motor run and feel comfy that you do not have any big issues 800 is an OK price

Re: is it worth buying a Used 454 Big block motor

if it is all stock it doesn't make the power it should the older 454's made more power cause gas was cheaper in the 90's people started caring about gas mileage, so if you are looking for power your only gonna want the block, you might be able to use other parts to but different heads would do alot of good

Re: is it worth buying a Used 454 Big block motor

I have a 454 in my 92 GMC K-3500 and it is a dog compared to the older ones.

My son has an older model 454 in his '70 C-10 and it seems to have a lot more power.

Re: is it worth buying a Used 454 Big block motor

I recently picked up a car hauler, 1974 GMC 1-ton modified to haul cars, then modified to haul sheds for a local lumber yard (where I work) It had less than 5000 miles on a rebuilt 454, less than 6500 miles on the rebuilt TH400 tranny, the whole truck was picked up for,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,$800.00! (I just got lucky is all) It couldn't pass the State Vehicle Inspection.

Re: is it worth buying a Used 454 Big block motor

I think $800's just a little high, too.

A friend recently found a magnafluxed and boreable 454 block, turned crank, pistons and rods, all the sheet metal, stock manifolds, balancer and flexplate, and 2 sets of heads (781's and Peanut ports) plus all the nuts bolts, pushrods, etc. for $750.

The deals are out there. Keep looking.

Good luck.

The newer engines have thin casted heads that crack real easy. I would look at it from a short block perspective only. Unless the heads have been changed. 4-500 tops.IMO

They Quit Making Good Bbc Engines After 1973. After That They Were All In The Cost Cutting Years And Smog Engines. Best Bet Is To Find A Early Engine, There Out There 4 Sure.
