71 SWB - Just a Knock on a door away!

I’ve seen this truck from a road I drive on frequently, It’s pretty hidden from view behind a barn and a few trees. Hidden that is unless your looking for something -> old trucks.

I’ve been looking for a clean PS bedside for my 68 for a while now. I remember this truck appeared to have a clean one so I decided to stop buy and take a look.

Friday stopped in and looking over the truck I went knocking on the door to the house and a nice older man answer the door. I asked him it he would be interested in selling the Pickup. He reply “Yep it’s for sale, but I haven’t tried listing it yet was gonna do that last summer but never got around to it”

This was the perfect candidate for a nice bedside for my 68, But now I think I’m building a 71 from a truck with minimal rust. The truck that I just purchase for a good bedside I ended up getting the whole truck for the cost of less than a bedside.

#1 rule - Knock on doors for good deal on trucks!

Great find! I was in the same boat as you. I was looking around for parts for my '71 Cheyenne SWB and ended finding a '69 that was a much better truck. Now I gotta decide what to do with the '71!

Re: 71 SWB - Just a Knock on a door away!

That was a very nice score and looks like it will make a really nice truck to build! After I read this post I got insprired to go see about a 72 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 that I had spotted sitting in a barn about 3 years back when my wife and I were looking at buying a different house.

I drove by and sure enough it was still there, but this time it was sitting outside. I rang the doorbell and an old man that had to be in his late 80's to early 90's answered the door. I asked about the truck and was told no,that it wasn't for sale.

He told me that his son has a spreader on the back of it and uses it on the family farm. He said that they just couldn't part with it because it's 4wd and they still use it around the farm since it gets around muddy spots a lot better than any of the other trucks that they own.

I tried to persuade him to part with it, but no dice. I just missed a 71 shortbed 1/2 ton 4x4 fleetside.I messed around long enough that by the time I got around to stopping and asking about the truck it was already gone. The next time that I spot one, I'm not messin' around about asking. I have wanted another 71-72 ever since I made the mistake of selling my 71 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 well over 4 years ago. I have been kicking myself daily ever since. ...Joe

Re: 71 SWB - Just a Knock on a door away!

Over Memorial Day I spotted a SWB that looked to be in OK shape, the engine (I6) was partially disassembled. Interior was a mess, but otherwise OK unrestored faded/light rust truck.

I knocked on a door and no one was there.

I left a note with my number inside. A few days later the guy called me, I asked him if it was for sale. He replied "did you see a for sale sign in it?". I was a little surprised by his answer and the fact that he went to the effort to call me when he didn't want to sell it. He went on to tell me that he'd been offered $4300 for it and turned it down. Finally after talking to him for 10 min. I realized he wasn't going to make me any kind of DEAL on it, so I let him go.

I was thinking this guy was crazy for not selling it for $4300 (if he actually got an offer like that). It was probably worth $1500-$2k.

So it didn't work out for me that time. Maybe next time

Re: 71 SWB - Just a Knock on a door away!

You know those crate seats are stolen property...LOL The ones they sell at the dollar store would not support anything over 50 pounds.

Shhh...I have a few in my bed...good for holding groceries.

So if what I read is correct, you bought a short wheel base fleetside truck for less than 450.00 dollars?
