Oil Pressure 80 Silverado??

I am looking at a 80 Silverado to buy (one owner Az truck) and on the test drive I noticed the oil pressure was (to me) low. The gauge was a 60# high and it was riding in the center, so I am thinking 15-20#, is this about right for a 80 350cid.??
I was also thinking about the 700R from the 80's as a bad transmission, but after all these years it has survived so I guess it is good!
This truck is almost flawless but the oil pressure leaves some doubt!!

Re: Oil Pressure 80 Silverado??

At idle mine will be in the center, and at cruise it'll be around the 3/4 mark.

AT minumum it would accept 15PSI at idle. I forget what the minumum for every 1000RPM

Re: Oil Pressure 80 Silverado??

10 psi for every 1000 RPMs

if its a 0-60 gauge and it was in the middle, then you're running about 30 psi. not real sure why you would think 15-20. another thing to keep in mind is the gauges arent always accurate, but will never show a higher pressure in error.

as for the 700R4, if its an 80 Silverado, there's no chance that the 700R4 is stock, as the 700R4 didnt come out until 1982

Re: Oil Pressure 80 Silverado??

I guess I just divided it too many times, 30# is more like it!!

The shift indicator has a L1 and L2 so I thought it was a four speed, and that was a 700R, no?

If you seriously want the truck and truly want to know what the pressure is, mount a manual gauge on it to see, before purchase. What you have told me, sounds good so far.

Re: Oil Pressure 80 Silverado??

Sounds acceptable to me. Different weights of oil can change the oil pressure, which brings up the old trick of moving to the thicker oil to "tighten" up an engine that is worn.
