help
im trying to charge the ac on my 86 but when i turn it on the clutch kicks in on the compressor for about 3 seconds or so and then it kicks off. what do you think is wrong with it?

There's a low pressure switch on the drier that keeps the compressor from turning on when the charge is low. Keep adding refrigerant, the compressor will continue to cycle until the pressure is high enough to keep it running. Make sure you have a gauge on it so you don't put too much in.

the kit i bought had a cheap guage on the can and i put it in untill it got to the top of the green (full) area which didnt take much and quit. do you think i should keep adding it?

Depends on what you're doing. Is your system r134 or r12? Are you just topping off the refrigerant or are you filling an empty system?

the system is r12 and had very little in it i bought a retro fit kit to swap it over to 134a and it said it could be mixed.

The compressor is most likely cycling too quick from a low charge like SWB85 said. As far as those gauges go that show green as a good charge, they dont work so great.
To charge the a/c with the proper amount i would reccomend starting from scratch and filling it to the proper amount. My 85 calls for 3.0 pounds Alldata says an 86 is 3.5 lbs? not sure about that You're supposed to pull a vacuum on the system and all that good stuff, but you can get away without it. You may just not get the maximum cold temperature. Good luck with that -Jeremy
