Carb and Manifold ?

When I bought the truck someone had swaped in a 305 or 350 out of a mid or early 80's vehicle. It has all the smog equipment blacked off. My question is what carb and/ or manifold should I look into installing on it. I have no real knowledge of these areas. Any help would be appreciated.

Oh yeah the truck is old enough in Texas to be emissions exempt, so that is not a problem. All it has to have is a regular air cleaner.

The best manifold on the market right now for performance trucks is the Edelbrock Performer RPM. With an unmodified early 80's engine a 625-700 cfm carb on your truck will run great. Try to get a carb in the Holley style (Holley or Demon) or a Q-Jet style from Edelbrock. If you talk to Edelbrock they will even size the jets according to your engine prior to shipping so that is set ready to install and run from the box.

For a stock 305, a Performer RPM intake might be a little much. It is designed to make power from 1500-6500 RPM. I would go with a regular Performer unless your motor has a big cam, headers, and nicer heads on it. The Performer makes power from idle-5500 RPM. For a carb, a 600 CFM Edelbrock or Carter would be a good choice, or a Q-jet. The Q-jet is known for better mileage, but it is very expensive to buy one brand new. Good luck!

Only if Texas isn't in the US.

ANY engine that was manufactured with required emissions equipment MUST have that emissions equipment on it, inspections or no.

There is a $2500 EPA fine for removing it ($25K if you are a shop).

What I meant is in Texas you have to past a mere visual test. Oh look it has a stock air cleaner with a cold weather tube ... it is okay. Other vehicles in Texas are required to past a tail pipe test with the car on a machine doing 35 mph (in the big counties). Thus emmission exempt in Texas usually just means you have to pass a safety test and a visual test.

Id go with the performer intake on a stocker,top it off with a 600 edelbrock or carter.......if you have the extra funds,the Q jet will get better milage. Emissions.......whats that! As long as no sharpie reads the vin on my longhorn, & figures that it did in fact come from California........I should be ok in Illinois!Good luck .....crazy AL
