Insurance

After 5 short years , Ill be driving my truck within a week or so. I need insurance. My daily driver has always been on my dads insurance plan with State Farm.
Im 22, with no wrecks or anything on my record. I wont be using my truck every day, but I want to use it way more than just going to shows. I would like to get theft coverage, basically full coverage for my truck. A couple problems maybe though, I dont have a lockable garage to keep it in, my daily driver is on my dads plan, and Im going to use it more than just shows. I figured I would insure it for about 20k if possible.

Any pointers?
Thanks

Re: Insurance

I have my truck insured through All State. I'm 26 and pay about $600 for a year for the 67. It has a "stated value" of 7K and has comprehensive and collision on it. I can drive it whenever the hell I want and it's parked in a parking lot in an apartment complex.

My Z71 is on Geico, but they wouldn't insure the 67 for more than liability and "book value."

Re: Insurance

I'm 27, live near you, married, full coverage, "utility vehicle", under 7500 miles a year, no stated value yet on the 72 c10, with Allstate. It's about $20 a month. Yes, you do need to turn 25 and get married quickly, but the long and short is that this truck is cheap to insure. My 79 Camaro, same coverages but not utility vehicle is about $30 a month, the 07 BMW, same coverages as the Camaro is $45, and the 06 VW, same coverages as the BMW and Camaro except over 7500 miles a year is $65. Maybe that'll give you a ratio idea of something you may have comparable that you are paying on already.

Re: Insurance

You also may want to discuss with the insurance agent about moving your daily driver over to your plan for a multi-car discount. Have them run multiple figures to see what is in your favor. Runs in my mind under 25 I had to have 3 cars to get the multicar discount though. It's worth asking. It also may work in your favor to put the truck on your dad's plan (if you live with him) and just pay him. His long-term history may help you out.

Re: Insurance

One more thing, I had trouble dealing with State Farm on a claim on the camaro (because of its age they didn't want to cover it). A friend of mine had a girl pull out in front of his 81 corvette (just completely redone), and Allstate paid $16k to fix it with a normal policy. They made him prove how much he had in it and they easily paid. I never resolved my case with State Farm (although I should have in hindsite). It was about $3000 they wouldn't pay for. I was insulted and bullied and I shouldn't have sat there and taken it. I don't work for insurance companies, btw, fyi. Good luck!

Re: Insurance

I have State Farm on all of my vehicles, house, contents, etc ..................

They wrote me 2 classic policies for the Blazer and the Jimmy. The Blazer is
about $15 a year. (No that is not a misprint) and it is insured for $15K. But
I can't drive it. It sits in the garage and is considered a "Project" vehicle. I
have everything but the rental car on the Blammy. I pay around $108 year
with towing and it is insured for $7500. (I am also over 25 and Married)

*Edit - I do have a 7500 miles a year restriction and was required to get a
set of Antique plates for the Blammy. The Blazer is NOT titled & no plates.

Re: Insurance

There are some companies that work with you. My son had one that lets you pay for full coverage only when you drive it. They just take the year total and divide it by 365. If you want to drive it you just go and pay the daily rate for how many days. Otherwise his insurance was over $3500 per year.

Re: Insurance

im under 25 and i checked thru many companies and all had the 25 or older rule. Really sucked because before they asked my age the told me i could get mine covered for 15K with no deductible on any accident, including hail and theft and there was no limit on mileage and it was gonna cost about $140 a year.........dam that 25 and older law

Re: Insurance

I have my three drivers (68 ShortStep, 69 SWB and 70 Flatbed) covered through Farmers Insurance. I only carry liability and don't do uninsured motorist - agent says you only need one vehicle covered and it covers the rest, so mine are only about $20 a month each.

Re: Insurance

A friend of mine is an insurance agent. He says the reason there is a 25 yr "rule" not law is because, statistically, men under 25 have "less" accidents than women of that age. However males accidents are more severe. Women have fender benders, men have major wrecks.

Now I've heard that may be changing to some degree-women are starting to have major accidents just like the men...

Re: Insurance

I drive a school bus. The most aggressive drivers I see are female. They tailgate and they speed, more than men that I see. The statistics don't lie, but as far as I am concerned, it's just a matter of time until the women catch up, statistically. Oh, the adder to that would be a female, texting while driving a vehicle with a handicapped license plate. I don't have statistics, just report what I see.

Before I met my wife, she had become a widow with two kids. Her insurance went up because she was under 25 and single.

In contrast, my youngest daughter became a mother before she was 25 and was single. Her insurance went down, because she was a mother.

I think it sucks that the insurance companies can treat unmarried men under the age of 25 like they do, but they have the statistics and pay people a lot of money to keep track of the numbers.

Keep track of all you spend on your truck, to be able to prove to the insurance company what you have tied up in it. I don't know if I can do that with my truck. Paying an individual to do the work and so forth that I can't do, when the shop isn't a bonafide body shop, isn't going to help. So I'm going to depend on a qualified appraiser to help me when it is done. By that time, I'll have about $16K in mine and I'll be lucky to have receipts for half of it.

Re: Insurance

Sounds like Im going with Allstate. They do the classic insurance, but its actually through Hagerty. I can still have my DD on my dads plan, they just need proof that my name is on it. So I basically have Hagerty insurance. FULL coverage for $661 a year. I dont think thats a bad price for 22 yrs old. Plus they are pretty lenient on driving restrictions. If I said it was stock (dont think that will work) it would have only been 360 a year. As far as insured value, I tell them what I think its worth and send them some pictures. If they agree, thats what it is insured for. Ill try to post some pics of my truck on here tonight to make sure Im getting insured for about the right amount.

Re: Insurance

My quote was for 20k on this truck, that is if Hagerty agrees. Am I getting insured for the correct amount?

Re: Insurance

That is a really sweet lookin truck, I would say 20k is about right, with haggerty there is no hassling over the amount of the repair. If it is wrecked or hit they cut you a check for the 20k and you surrender the truck or work out a difference. Their declared value policies are great.

Re: Insurance

My father in law has a '87 grand national with 40,000 miles on it. He just got collecter car insurance on it, $25,000 worth. He checked with haggerty, but thought they were a little high. I will find out who he went through, but I do know he is only going to pay $500 a year to insure it through his new company, and the coverage was a little better than haggerty as well. I would reccomend checking around, but remember "cheaper" is not always better.

I will agree on the first part (my blazer costs me $200/year for FULL coverage) but heartily disagree on the second part (marriage is far more expensive than ANY auto insurance policy!).
