Good deal on an air compressor?
Went to Lowes Home Hardware this afternoon and came across a Porter Cable air compressor at what seems to be a great price.
Model #CPLC7060V 7 HP(peak), 60 gallon stationary oil lube compressor vertical tank, 220 Volt, 135 PSI max, 12.1 SCFM @ 40 PSI/9.7 SCFM @ 90 PSI, Cast iron cylinder sleeves $379.00(regular price). I found it on amazon.com for $529.99. Since amazon matches prices - 10% they will give it to me for $388 including shipping and tax. It is not on their website(www.lowes.com) but you can find it at http://www.portercable.com/cgi-bin/p...d_id=CPLC7060V Is this a good deal and is this a good air compressor? |

Sounds like a heck of a deal to me. I'd say go for it! Porter Cable is a reputable brand.
I only wonder why you want the one from Amazon.com. Why wouldn't you just go to Lowes and buy it there? I guess tax would be one reason. I would buy the one at Lowes so you don't have to worry about the freight gorillas bending yours up when they haul and deliver it. My wife bought me a nice (Porter Cable, in fact; from Amazon even) pressure washer last spring. It had signs of obvious mis-handling by the freight company. It's always such a pain in the butt trying to get the freight company to do anything about damage. The damage wasn't too bad, but I spent a half-hour straightening the tubing frame back up so it would look better and roll straight. I figure if you're on this board, you already have a truck. If yours is in the shop, you can surely find someone to help you haul it. Good Luck, especially if you go the Amazon route.

71GMC_3/4T, you are correct. I will go with Lowes. However, for those on this board who do not have easy access to Lowes, they can get the same deal from Amazon.

Alex,
Get a printout of what Amazon.com can do. Take it to Lowes and have *them* beat that price! You might get an even better deal! It can't hurt to try.

Got an even better deal. Went to Home Depot and got them to match that price($379 at Lowes) and beat it buy 10%. That amounts to $341. If anyone is looking for a good compressor at a good price, the legwork might be done for you.

Regarding running a sand blaster, you may want to look at a larger compressor. I ran one with a single stage compressor for a couple of years, but there is a heckuva lot of difference between that and stepping up to a twin stage industrail type unit (more air, more blasting power). If you are blasting occassionally, the single stage 5-7 HP units will work fine and the price is right. If you blast a couple of times a week or more, you may want to look into something stouter like a Ingersoll Rand T30.

I bought the exact same air compressor from Lowes a few months ago and I absolutely love it! (I paid $400 though) I can use my air tools now! It also works great for sandblasting. (im doing a frame now) I retired my smaller Craftsman unit.
I know the 2 stage compressors work much better but for under $400, you can't go wrong. The 2 stage are twice as much by the way) If you can afford it, go with the better one but if not, I think you'll like the single.

Here's an idea I had to make an existing compressor work better. graft a skidoo belt drive on to it to run the pump. at low pressure/thus low load it would spin the pump faster and at high pressure/high load it would slow down to not overwork the motor. I would imagine that this would fill the tank a lot faster, probably about 25% less time. its a variable load application, why should it not have a transmision of sorts to increase effeciency? I imagin this would work really good on a gas powered compressor.
Just an idea, but new stuff sure is nice to have! Jesse
