'65 chevy c10 - bad vibrations! things to check?

Howdy folks.

'65 c10, chevy, long wheel base, stepside, 350 engine block, th350 3 speed auto transmission, coil spring rear with the arms...

My '65 c10 has started a new thing where there is a vibration when I go from being stopped, to when I begin accelerating... then it goes away once I get up around 20 mph or more.

The tranny fluid is good... and the same color translucent red... not black. Of course, it could very well be tranny issue, but I have no idea.

Any ideas on basic things to check before I take it to a shop?

I'm planning on taking the rear wheels off and checking out the brakes, as I had a issue earlier this year with the right rear brake shoes sticking and rubbing down to nothing.

Anything else to check?

I'd check the u-joints,ftont end parts, and check your tires.

That was my first impulse... had a similar vibe in a car once. I thought I'd ask around, to check other stuff while I was under there.

drive shaft thing broke


So, this is a long wheelbase, it has two drive shafts, which connect in hole that runs through a cross member.

That bracket/doodad that hold up the two drive shafts is very, very broken.

I do not know what that thing is called, but it most certainly is broke.

Anyone know what that is called?

Is this some specific funky part for my lwb and year model or style... truck?

I think there are two bolts on the top, feels that way anyway...

Now, the piece that wraps around... any tips on taking that off? Safety things... how to... suggestions?

and just so you will know, its not specific to your year and model. for an example theres one on my dads 88 burb. correct me if im wrong, but the carrier baring is there on lwb or long trucks to prevent vibrations right? hints why swb and shorter trucks and suvs dont have it?

That looks like the same center bearing as on a 64 Impala...I thnk I have a new one somewhere...mabey I can save you some $$$

I have a '63 shop manual and a '65 shop manual... the 60-66 assembly manual/guide...

in the 1963 shop manual - section 4-103 , figure 189 - it shows the drive shaft and all of that.

in the 1965 shop manual - all I found are a few paragraphs in section 4-26

I haven't messed with any kind of a u-joint since I was a kid fetching tools for my dad... I'm not real sure on how to go about this.

This requires some contemplation.

well to pull the drive shaft you dont have to take out a u-joint. take the 4 bolts off where the drive shaft bolts to the rear end. and im sure you can go from there. as for removing the u-joints, take the clips off. i use a old socket and a hammer to remove the u-joints. just my two cents.

yeah I recall my dad doing that when I was a kid... I was tapping on it and it didn't seem to move, I was afraid to really whale on it, thinking I was remembering incorrectly.

well as long as the clips are out it will come out. sometimes its a pain in the ass but with a little elbow grease they should pop right out.

Go slow and be careful! I would try to press them out in a hydrolic press or a big bench vise. You don't want to distort the u-joint saddles with an errant hammer blow, then you will have to find a nother driveshaft. Just a thought. Joe

well thats probably the safest way but my dads been doing it with a deep socket and a hammer since he was 13. so, thats the way ive always done it and never messed one up. i guess im the most redneck mechanic in the world. ill take whatever is closest to me and fix everything. hell i had a old honda atc250es big red that would hold up to anything you put it through and was held together almost completely with bailing wire and duct tape. lol im extremely creative when it comes to riggin things up.

After taking it out and consulting with my dad, he said I might as well replace all three of the joints while I was at it... I told him I was thinking the same thing, so 3 joints and a bearing, done.

O.K. folks, my friendly local auto parts store(FLAPS), the local NAPA had all the parts on the shelf! I did not believe it, and they saved me 5 bucks giving me the online quoted price. Sometimes you get lucky, I guess.

I took the shaft and the new parts to the machine shop and with the help of my instructors, we pressed them out and in using this big manual press there in the shop. That thing is very handy and I'm fairly certain it is way older than I am. Old tools are fun, also, it seems.

I marked up everything with a scribe and a black sharpie marker, even numbered the parts so I would keep them in order.

After re-assembly of the shaft and stuff, I put the Zerk fittings in snug & later I popped 'em full of grease. Now I just have to put it back under the truck.

DO CHEAP STUFF 1rst......CHECKS. If your timing is delayed your truck will shake at low m/hr and get better and better as you speed up. The opposite if your timing is advanced. See if your bolt is loose that holds the distrib. in timing. Check points gap and condition. check cap and rotor condition. Check s.plug and S.plug wires especially close to high heat areas, and connection. ALL of this has caused this vibration in the malibu 71 and 72 I use to have(350) that you explained. GOOD LUCK $00000 If the vibration is w/ a fluttering Exhaust sound it's most likely these things. Also the vibration woulld happen pressing the gas in neutral. If it doesn't your on probably on the right track w/ your d.shaft on U joints.

i did own a 64 swb that had one. don't ask me why it did I still have the drive shaft.

I got down and dirty with my truck this morning and actually the fellas that did my swap changed out all the driveshaft parts for new hardware...so then I had my friend whos pretty nifty with motors check things out and yes we came to the conclusion it was timing....Ill get it adjusted either tomorrow or over the weekend, I dont have a gun of my own so have to wait til I get time to head over to the local garage. thanks for the info guys and great job Woogeroo
