Edelbrock 1406 Carb opinions
I just purchased a Edelbroke 1406 carb. Its going on my 350 with performer intake, headers, and other than that the 350 is stock.
Has anyone use this combo or a close approximation of and are you pleased with the performance. Any issues with the electric choke or carb in general? |

I had one on my '72, ran great out of the box. That was with an older Edelbrock intake, headers, and an RV cam...

I have the 1406 on my 350 now - I used to have the 1407 (750). Both of them did a fine job. If you really want to understand them, the owner's manual contains a ton of information. If you didn't get it with your carb, you can download it from Edelbrock's Web site. I also recommend the book by Dave Emanuel about Carter carburetors (I think it now has Carter/Edelbrock in the title).

1406 has .100 main jets. I found that to be a richer setup than I wanted to keep. My setup was the same as yours will be. I went to an Edelbrock Q-Jet at 750cfm and I couldn't be happier. The 1406 has a manual choke, too. The Q-Jet is divorced and electric. It has always worked properly. Do what you like but think about the big picture.

I have the 1405, but converted it to electric choke. Starts right up in the winter, does not boil over or vapor lock in the summer (I live in the desert of Utah), it is easily serviceable, and as stated above, the booklet tells you exactly what you need to do to tune it to your engines requirements. I personally like them over the Holley. (sorry Holley users) My only other choice for a carburetor is a properly tuned Q-jet. I still have the original '68 Q-jet in my garage.

This 1406 has the elctric choke and I did down load the manual. I haven't had time to get it installed yet but hopefully soon. I went with the 600 CFM because I have heard that going to big is worse then to small. I have a worn out Q jet on there now. Vapour locks at any temp over 32C and when I have it punched it seems to starve the engine for fuel.
I bought off ebay and it came with a Edel jet kit so hopefully with some assistance I should be able to get it dialed in

I agree. Awesome carb and an awesome price!
My ONLY regret... would be the low CFM's. I think my truck would go faster with a 750 carb.

loved mine had to step up on metering rods (easy job) out of the box, but easier to tune and less maintenance than holley hands down

Went the same way but backed out the edlebrock intake in favor of the stock. The small primary openings on the stock intake make for better low end torque and better mileage. Using a stock aluminum intake worked best for my application. Also be aware that if running a high performance camshaft, you can have too low a vacuum to properly run the edlebrock carbs without major tuneing. Huck

I've got a 1406 with the performer manifold, 350, mild cam, automatic, and I really like it. I think you will be very happy with that combo, imo.

BOTH of my trucks are sporting Edelbrocks and BOTH of them are VERY hard to start if they sit for more than a week. In fact every Edelbrock I've owned has displayed this 'feature'. Other than that, easy to tune and they perform well.

I have the electric choke versions on both my 68 and 70. They both needed tuned first before running good, but I am at about 5300' elevation. Otherwise, I am very pleased with them both. The 70 is a stock GM crate motor with a Performer intake and an HEI, and the 68 has a crate motor with a Comp 268H, aluminum intake, and an HEI.

I have the 1405 with a Weiand dual plane intake, ram horns and the rest is stock. Easy to tune and being in Texas I opted for the manual choke.

I have the 1406 on my 69 SWB and runs great with the 350 crate engine. Also have one on my son's Camaro with headers and a mild cam - he likes it. Picked up another one, NIB, pretty cheap the other day - hope to use it on one of the other trucks.

The 1406 Edelbrock is actually a 625 CFM carb. It was sold as a 600 CFm carb, due to the Carter AFB is the EXACT same carb design and manufacturer base (Magnetti-Marrelli under the weber name and believe it or not the parts are interchangeable). Carter offered it as a 625 and Edelbrock decided to offer less (with a little more performance hidden in the name).
The carbs are a great basic unit for any engine and can be programmed to work where you want it. Many people grump about the transition from the primaries to the secondaries as a hard/sharp change and that the vacuum carbs are better. I have run these carbs for a few years (yes even the Carter carb, still have it in a box) and I have been able to calibrate them to my desires and performance. I have a 383 stroker motor in my truck and a 350 cammed motor in my son's truck, both with Edelbrock carbs. If you choose to go with a Edelbrock AVS (thunder carb) it is a step up to 650 CFM (this is what I am presently running on my stroker motor) and does make a difference on a more "built up" engine. Over the time, I have purchased a variety of needles, springs, and jets to allow for modiying the performance of my carbs. As I stated the carb can be adjusted to work well with just about anything. The carbs work well with my auto trannys and the kickdown for the passing gear is great. Don't get me wrong, there is always room to build better (such as a bigger secondary throat in the carb), but this is a good solid unit for daily use. |

I have that carb on my BB 396 and it was there when I bought the truck in 2001. I've put about 10,000 miles on the truck since I bought it and have never touched the carb. Its starts easy even after sitting for a week. I park the truck for the Winter ( usually Oct to late Apr ) and all I gotta do is pump the gas pedal 10 or 15 times to get her started in the spring. I highly recommend the carb.
