Arrow Fresh Look For My Tailgate!

I decided to freshen up my tailgate today. Mixed up a little paint (SEM black) sanded the gate a bit and gave her a shot. This paint is so easy to maintain that scatches and chips are a worry of the past. I spent about 3 hours from start to finish. Decided to install it tomorrow and took a cruse with my future son in law (Eric) instead.

The tailgate looked pretty good. One day I closed the shop door and the truck was too close and the door scaped the gate. I repaired the gate and fogged it in with (SEM black) in a bomb as a temporary fix as I new the gate was coming off to do my bed floor. I installed the hardware yesterday and will install the gate tomorrow.

The picture is of the gate before the repaint.

Diggin' your LWB...very subtle and clean. The only thing I'd consider changing is throwing on some big-n-little hoops. Great Job "Low-Life".

BTW- What sort of internal combustion magic do you have lurking under the blankets in the garage? The old-skool whites have piqued my curiosity!

Fleetside I'll send this pic of it, you can save this and you can print it off, you'll get a copy 8.5 X 11 from your home printer.

I just tried and it's way to large a format and I cannot crop it as this would ruin the picture .... if you PM me your e/mail address I'll forward you a copy.

Re: Fresh Look For My Tailgate!

You guys just about got it, good detective work .... it's a C1 generation - 1960 315 high hp. Fulie Corvette.

My wife Linda and I are pushing hard to finish the 70' GMC/LWB so we can begin to finish the Vette this winter ....

I'm the second owner, purchased it when I was 23 years old. The restoration that you see has been done in our shop and nothing to date has been farmed out. Our Corvette has been mechanically rebuilt and cosmetically restored as per factory specifications. It is correctly # internally as well as externally. The red trunk liner on the wall is signed and dated by Zora Duntov who was the chief engineer hired by GM and who saved the Corvette from an early demise with the advent of the fuel injection and the Duntov cam, this combination created 283hp from 283 cu or 1hp per cu in 1957. As things progressed in later years Corvette was producing 315 hp out of a 283 cu engine in 1960 so the race was on to see how much hp could be actualy achieved per cu.

I hope you enjoy the pictures ....

Re: Fresh Look For My Tailgate!

This 'Vette restoration is over the top, I could stare at the frame for hours, it is so meticulous. ESLL, correct me if I am wrong, but I think you said there are 6 different shades of flat black on the frame?

Can hardly wait to see this finished!

The tailgate and truck looks great too!

Larry

Hi Larry,

Your right there are a lot of shades of black and also different sheen's as well. The more you look the more you see, (pictures make it harder to pick up on this though.)

Been at the truck every day for about 6 weeks now, will be finished soon, putting on the gate today and getting ready to bend some pipe for my new headers, Wayne has convinced me to do it in my shop rather then Midas. Easy for Mr. Fabricator but I'm going to give it a try. The 32 that I posted is his current project.

How is your truck coming along is it out for paint yet .... drop a line and update me or better yet let's do coffee.

Catch you later ....

john.

Re: Fresh Look For My Tailgate!

The '72 is completely blown apart right now, I said I would only have it off the road for a few months, but you know how that goes! I am currently cleaning and prepping the cab floor for POR-15 or Line-X, haven't decided which, and the frame will be going to my buddies welding shop to be shortened as soon as he has a free day. Then I will blast it and paint it, rebuild the suspension, install airbags, etc., get the cab back on and get it driving again.

I am shooting for next summer, it depends on how busy work is this winter.

Let's do coffee soon, my schedule is much better than it has been, my afternoons are clear this week and next, so far! Let me know what works.

Cheers!

Tell me about all the crazy stuff. It never ends. Your friend should get a hold of some good resto. books for his 68' and a NCRS Judging Manual. (That is if he hasn't already.)

The exhaust manifolds were painted along with the engine prior to being installed into the frame. A cherry picker with large hooks would pick up the engine by hooking onto the underside of the ram horns. When the engine is started most of this paint will burn off except for the ears front and back. See picture .... the french locks, any nuts and bolts holding them on are all painted. Bell housing with cadium bolts were over sprayed as the bell housing was installed prior to engine painting. Early 57 picture of engine being installed at the factory.

If you look close you can see the paint is almost showing the grey block casting through it in behind the manifolds, this is because they were installed prior to engine paint. A lot of guys paint all these parts first and then install them and of course they get paint coverage in areas the factory never did. The engine should go from areas that are easy to paint to areas that are more difficult and the paint coverage as a result ranging from great to just about over spray or next to no coverage at all( a mist.)

I will try to get you some more pictures. These pictures will show the Corvette being torn down, frame painting and the progressive steps to what you see now. I have to take pictures of pictures to be able to down load them so this could take some time. Are you really sure you want to see these type of pictures and if so where would it be best to post them. Not exactly truck stuff ....

Here are some more pics of the Vette. My engine just got back from the machine shop (this is a few years ago now.) Ross Racing Pistons hand made a set of high dome pistons to factory specifications for it. There is also a factory correct crank and NOS Duntov cam installed which puts the comp. ratio ttt (11 to 1.) The frame is stripped and being prepped for paint and the body was put on a dolly that I made, this allows me mobility and all the factory frame to body contact points rest as if the body was on the the frame.

esll.

PS: These pictures were originally taken with a 35 mil camera. I had to retake them on my digital .... sorry not the best quality.
