Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
I thought I remembered post from times past that someone was able to modify the factory behind the seat brackets to install 6x9 speakers. Has anyone done this?
Any reccommendations for a reasonably priced CD player w/ MP3 input? I don't mind cutting the dash. I use my truck working on my rentals in the hood, so I'm not looking for anything too nice. |

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
GM used to sell corner pieces that you put 6X9 speakers in the corner of the 81 through the 87 Chevy trucks.

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
The only GM pieces I have seen were for 4X10 speakers, but that does not mean they did not offer anything else. The 6X9 brackets were widely produced at one time by the aftermarket, but I have never been able to locate any new ones. I have a pair that I found after a couple of years of searching junkyards.
A friend was able to mount 6X9 speakers to the factory 4X10 mounts by reversing the left and right brackets. That repositioned the speakers enough to allow more room for the larger 6X9 magnets to clear the cab. He just bolted the 6X9 speakers to the 4X10 holes as best he could. I talked to a stereo installer on another board several years ago. He said he made them from 3 pieces of MDF. There ws the one that the speaker mounted to that screwed to the side and back of the cab at 45 degree angles along with top and bottom plugs to seal up the opening. Slonaker |

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
I used stock 4x10 brackets, cut em to fit in the 6x9s. I'll try to get some pics if you want.
As for a decently priced CD player with MP3 input I got a Sony from wal-mart. It was about $120. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=5148256 I was happy with it, pulled it out of my blazer before I sold it. Im considering putting in in my 07 Tahoe...

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
My son's truck (86 Chevy Silverado) has two metal pieces (one for each side)that came from over the GM parts counter that hold 6X9 speakers, they mount down low in the corner of the cab, by the seat belt housings. These pieces are enclosed and fit along the inside of the cab's metal work. I have seen them in other trucks, also. We purchased them from the dealer and are still using his.

Look on eBay. I see the corner brackets there all the time.

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
This is my factory 4X10 bracket.
This is one of the aftermarket 6X9 brackets I got from a junkyard truck. I assume it is aftermarket since it has no markings on it, but it could be the item piecesparts is talking about. Slonaker |

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
there easy to make with plywood, particle board.mock something up out of card board if you can't visualize it.i just made a face plate for the speaker to screw to,then a wedge shaped box,triangle..screwed it down with a couple of small L brackets.covered it in dynamat.looks good and sounds great.makes a great box for the bass sounds.

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
I have the exact ones Slonaker has posted. I was lucky enough to get them from a local stereo shop while they still made them. Later when I asked him if they still had them whe Slonaker was looking for his, he told me that they did not carry them any more. They only had some cheap plastic ones because too many people were cutting themselves while installing these.

The truck is a hundred miles down the road, but when we purchased them, I did not cut them to fit the 6"X9" speakers, they were already that size. They came from GM that way. As I stated, they mount to the floor of the cab on the bottom end and the top is screwed to the metal inner liner of the cab corner and they are made of metal. Their mounting creates a corner box effect and works reasonably well. However, if you have the 4" by 10", you might make them work for a 6"X9" or at least use it as a pattern. The ones that I have are shaped something like Slonaker's picture, but are completely flat across the front (which goes from the back wall to the door jamb) and holds a 6"X 9" speaker without any cutting. To be honest, the 4" X 10" designed speakers are not a normal thing where I have been looking. Last edited by piecesparts; 08-30-2007 at 11:45 AM. |

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
My 86 has 6x9s in the corners behind the seat. They were installed at a stereo shop here in Springfield when the previous owner had my truck. I can take some pictures tomorrow if you want to see them. ...Joe

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
Gm made a 6x9 bracket. I had them in ym truck when I got it. Just some crap sheet metal, not worth a crap for mounting speakers into.
What I have now is a little better anyway.

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
you can modify the back holding bracket to fit 6x9s...it will be a lil flimsy at the sides, but you could always reinforce that with fiberglass, resin, and about 30 toothpicks for braces

Or you can do this: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=287987
. These brackets are really nice, heavy pieces. |

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
I made triangular boxes out of thin MDF and painted them black. I installed regular round speakers (4"?) but you could put larger speakers in them also - just cut the face plate to the size of your speaker. I then built a triangular storage box out of oak plywood for miscellaneous stuff and a cushioned place to transport a 4' level without it getting beat up. I will post pics if you want. It worked out well for me.

Re: Putting 6x9 speakers behind the seat
i bought 6x9 boxes then cut them thinner to fit. Worked well this way because i was able to get the speaker outside the seat(firing past) instead of muffled behind the seat. i will take a picture, worked better than i originally intended.
