really need cam help please

I could really use some input of a good cam kit to install in my 402. I have an old edelbrock torker intake and holley 4bbl (soon to be a demon). The truck has an auto trans. I would like a hydraulic lifter cam and want it somewhat grumpy but streetable. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks

Re: really need cam help please

call a couple of cam manufactures and summit see what they think the more details you can give them the better they can help you get the right cam the first time

Istarted with Comp Cams in my 454 and had VERY BAD experiences with them. I then went with the Lunati Voodoo Cam and man oh man I LIKE IT

Same here. Tried a Comp Cam. After the initial break-in period, it had a Nice "choppy" idle, but with good vacuum, etc... I really liked this cam profile, but within two weeks that cam was totally trashed.... couldn't get it to run worth a @#$%....

will never use them again.

Re: really need cam help please

More than likley the problem was not your cam but your lifters and incorrect break in/ Oil.
It has been discussed many times on this site and thier are some great sites out on the web that discuss at great length cam, lifter and oil issues. They are all tied together.
http://www.elgincams.com/

I understand that these folks really know the cam business.
I have never spoken with them but know severl folks that use thier cams for larger scale high performance engine building and really prefer these over the "name brand" cams. They can also point you to a good lifter mfg. I understand only 1 or 2 good lifter mfgs still exisist.

Do your homework and I think it will pay you back on this project.

Re: really need cam help please

I've been running Comp Cams for a long time and never had a problem with them wearing out. I've got 35,000 on the one in my motor now. The only thing I don't like about the Extreme Energy series is that they're make the valve train noisy.

I've heard good things about the Vodoo camshafts. I'm going to try one of those next.

Re: really need cam help please

If you've ever had a warrantee problem with comp and talked to their warrantee rep ,his name is RED, you'll NEVER deal with them again. I've never spoken to a more rude and loud mouthed &^$#$% in my whole life.

I broke my cam in properly; I’ve been doing it for 30+ years. This one was very noisy, and trust me it WAS the cam. After going with the Lunati my problem was solved

Just my 2c

I'm also running a Lunati Voodoo Jeg's # 638-60203LK with the Weiand Stealth intake Jegs # 925-8018 on my 454. Great combination, very good throttle response.

Re: really need cam help please

Since you`re using a straight runner intake,I assume you`re looking for alot of high rpm power.Look for a cam profile that will match that and expect to use a higher stall speed converter.
For "streetability" you may want to consider a dual plane to get some more torque in the range a street truck runs in.An air gap design would be better yet.Torkers are pretty much a track manifold. At least not real street friendly IMO.
