Radiator Problems
I just flushed my radiator with the garden sprayer (while it was out) and now it leaks. I have a 3 speed 67 C20 with a 283 and no air. Someone installed a radiator from an automatic truck. The thing was working fine till I flushed it out with the garden hose. Now I have a leak coming from the bottom trans cooler fitting. It just pours our like it's a drain spigot!!! Could I have damaged it with the sprayer?? Can I just plug the hole and go on?? Dang!!

I have never seen this and I've had plenty of radiator issues. I would say yes, buy a plug and cap it off. The tanks are brass and the rest is copper, the copper normally goes first. I just bought a new radiator for my '69 and about puked when Orielly's price was $269.00, Autozone was $249.00...the radiator shop we use to repair radiators on the forklifts...$189.00. Needless to say, I could have bought an aluminum cheaper than the parts stores, I bought the $189.00 radiator and all is cool, literally!

Actually the radiator you have is sort of desirable since it has the trans cooler in it. If you ever decide to get an automatic, you need it.
I would suspect someone may have used radiator stop leak in it before and by flushing it, you may inadvertantly flushed the sealer out. Take it to a radiator shop and have them look at it. They unsolder the sides and will patch it for you and check for any other leaks. It's not as expensive as you might think. I had mine done couple years ago for $40.00. Totally cleaned and vatted, the leak fixed and pressure tested and painted. |

All of the radiators I have seen, being either manual or automatic have the tranny cooler. This may only be on the replacements..I don't know?? The problem with his is if he did have a automatic his transmission would be flooded with coolant. He probably has a pretty large hole in it.

i've spent so much time and money on radiators that turned out to be unrepairable or short lifespan repairs that i generally will go for a new radiator and quit all the trips to the shop and multipule fillups with antifreeze and the days in the shop . i feel its alot cheaper in the long run when you're dealin with cheap less than $200 radiators, if it were something exotic that was 500-700 to replace i'd be tryin to fixer up

Thanks for all the replies!!!! I have just purchased a 4 core radiator from Autozone for $179.00. Initially, I was just going to insert some threaded plugs to solve the problem. I figured it would be a temporary fix because the radiator appears to have been fixed (poorly) in the past. I figured I would buy new and move onto my next project and hopefully not look back. The Stop Leak is a great theory. I hadn't thought of that. I'm sure glad I didn't have an automatic transmission hooked to it!! Thanks again for the feedback

most A/M distributors carry just the AT rads to reduce the number of unique SKU's they have to carry. The MT rads are still made but harder to find

A few years ago I was driving my '72 LWB across country, down in San Antonio my radiator started to leak. I hunted down an Autozone in Universal City, Texas.
They were out of stock of radiators for my truck. I asked them for one for a '72 Caprice. It was a 3 row that fit for $99, and I was able to continue on to Florida...
