Good day my fine men. i dont know what kind of a trany i have but i have a Chevy 350 and i need a better trany that is better on fuel. i also need new gears on the rear dif for better fuel use. SO... what is a good set up for a trany and the rear dif? My buddy said something aboout a turbo 40o cuz it has over drive... And last, where do i find all this stuff?

Turbo 400 does not have an overdrive. Your options are a th350 with 3.07 gears, this will put you about 2000 rpm at hiway speed. For overdrive you can put a 200-4R in with the same driveshaft. This lets you use a 3.42 or 3.73 rear end which gives you better take off and still run the same rpms on the hiway. Or if you want a 700-R4 you'll have to shorten your driveshaft but other than that it has the same advantages as the 200.

The 700-R4 / 4L60 trans w/ 3.73 diff is a good & relatively inexpensive setup. Check w/ TCI for a decent tranny that has the constant pressure valve body...this greatly reduces the "finicky-ness" of the stock TV cable hookup.

You can also get a Gear Vendors overdrive unit that bolts on to your stock tranny and also provides an overdrive...these are a bit pricey, but bulletproof.

I am currently doing some research on the 5L50e trans out of a late 90's Caddilac STS. It's a five speed auto so it should have some great gear spacing, plus OD. The only question is does the Northstar V8 have a different bell housing profile then the standard SBC. I'll most likely need to have a custom drive-shaft fabricated and the linkage will be need to be figured out.

As far as diff gears are concerned....check with Yukon, Richmond, or any number of ring and pinion gear manufacturers. Unless you are setup and knowledgeable of how to assemble a differential, I'd definately leave this up to a professional.

Any body eals have input for this Thread??? i am getting ready to put some money in this truck... also i am looking for a shortbed with out sidestep - for a 1971 c-10 and both doors. i dont want to spend a lot of money on this truck and all the things i want/need from LMC will cost me about $2,500.

any one got feed back on this idea?

I agree with the other two posts on this one. Either the 200 or the 700 will work great for over drive tranny's. If I remember correctly the 200 is based loosly on the TH350 3spd and the 700 is based off the 400. If ya like banging gears Id go with either a 5 spd or a 6spd manual. Just my .02

The 200 was the overdrive for the Caprice and other full size GM cars . The 700 was put in the trucks probably the van also, not sure though.

700R4 from a reputable shop and a Bowtie Overdrive TV Made EZ kit.
You can't go wrong.

I LOVE my Godfather 700R from Maddog Transmissions.
But, I have now read some negative on them, and they are out of business I think. Goodfella's on eBay looks to be similar to what I got (their top of the line would be "The Boss").

First, we need to know what gears your truck has... and what your budget is.
If you have a 3.07 gear, and you go to a 3.73 and an overdrive tranny, then your RPMs will only chainge a little bit. Not enough to matter in all reality.
Now, if you do that, and you drop $3000... you'll be ticked off BIG TIME.
You can't go and try to improve on the unknown.

Peter,before you go spending money on body/trim parts try the vendors from the BB.They tend to have better pricing and great customer service.They also use what they sell so have tried to find the best quality parts available.There are links for them and for reveiws of their service.

BB= bullitin board..theres a list of vendors here on the board who are also into 67-72s..they most likely have better service and better pricingthen lmc..so it be better for you in the long run if you check them out before you buy lmc...cause they can save you some $$$

do they make a 5 speed or 6 speed automatic tranny for my 350? or is that the 200 and 700 trannys? i want to get rid of my 3 speed auto i got now.

Isnt the caddy FWD, Ive seen 4x4 guys run them instead of a tranny and case they run the driveshafts off the cv flange, so is the STS FWD IO thought they were??

If you have a long shaft th350 you can put in a 700r4 or 4l60e without much mods there under a half inch longer than the long shaft 350 so driveline usually can stay, the 200 is not that great of a tranny in my eyes Ive had em blow up but one of the built 200's from bowler or moster tranny would probably hold up

I want to run the 2004R behind my 250 inline. I think the gear ratio will be better.
I have seen the custom crossmembers for the 700s but not one for the 200's are they the same ??

Also has anyone hooked a BTO TV EZEE to a 250 Monojet , is it possible ??

These are the only two questiopns keeping me from pulling the trigger

#1 - A custom crossmember for the 700R4 or 200R4 for our trucks is unnecessary. All you have to do is move it back a few inches, and drill some new holes. That just don't warrant the money for a new one for me.

#2 - ANYTHING is possible with a little ingenuity. I don't know that they make a kit for your carb - but you could call them and ask what would be best. They may have a "universal" style kit.

Actually, no need to drill holes for the 200 4R, place the cross member in the TH400 position, use the shaft from a TH350 truck, and you're there! Run the TV kit (I also strongly recomend the bto kit) and you'll be in like flyn
