How long Can a Rebuilt Tranny Sit?

I have a neighbor who has a rebuilt t400 with shift kit and new reman converter. it was built I want to say 2 years ago and has sat with only the assembly lube in it. anyone know or have experiance with something like this. can I just add fluid and be good? should the seals be checked? he wants $400. for it and it sounds like a good deal. mine will need a rebuild soon and I know it will cost more.

Where has it been stored? Can he assure you that no water's ever gotten into it? Water will kill the clutches.

Re: How long Can a Rebuilt Tranny Sit?

I'd think it would be fine as long as it was kept in a dry environment..I kept mine sitting under a work bench from January till May before I put it in the truck, and then it sat there until June before it was used..

Re: How long Can a Rebuilt Tranny Sit?

I am thinking of buying a muncie 4-speed that has sat for 20 years. We opened it up and looked pretty good, shifted fine.

Re: How long Can a Rebuilt Tranny Sit?

I'm running a TH350 that I got for free, let sit outside in the rain for a year (the tranny fluid got milky)...it seems fine so far after about 1000 miles and several months but time will tell. If I could get a rebuild for $400...I would be all over it. The last time I checked they wanted about $850+ core charge and that was without any performance options!
