Re: Transmission inspection cover

Are you talking about the cover under the flywheel? Mine is metal so you must have a newer engine in it...

I see that yours is an automatic and if that's the cover you're are referring to it won't hurt to drive it like that. However, I wouldn't drive it on gravel and dirt roads unless you drive at slow speeds. Rocks may get kicked up into the flywheel and it may be possible to cause damage (its not very likely but you have to cover every possibility).

I have a manual and drove it for about 3 months on the highway with no problems until I found the cover.

If you replace the cover, let us know where you got it. I couldn't find one anywhere on the internet. Even tried GM parts and they no longer had it.

Re: Transmission inspection cover

I get them at the junk yard, plastic ones. I usually just walk thru the chevy section and pick one up. I have been getting them off of the 80's boxxy chevy cars or 70's and 80's trucks and vans.

As for running without it. No problem. My green and white one was missing it when I bought it. Ran for a couple years without one until I rembered to grab one from the junk yard.

I got one from Summit a few years back for my 400. It fits fine and was relatively cheap ($20, if I remember right). I ran mine without one for a few years - even on dirt roads, out in the woods for hunting, fishing, etc. I never had any problems.

Re: chrome ones.

I have an old GMC 250 three speed. No fancy stuff, just regular run of the mill farm truck in pretty good condition and I was looking for an original cover. No one makes a black one. I guess one can paint the chrome one.

I thought it would look too fancy for my truck.

Re: Transmission inspection cover

Honestly... I've NEVER had one on any of my trucks. Daily drivers all of them, been driving them since 97 with about a 1 1/2 year break in the depressing lincoln days... never an issue.
