How to ID Steering Column

I have a 69 GMC but the cab was replaced with a cab from a70 Chevy. How can I decipher if the steering column is the 69 or the 70? I believe it is the 69 but I am unsure. I need to order a Grant steering wheel adapter but they are different and I want to order the right one. Thanks in advance.

I have one of each uninstalled and I can't tell any difference except for the color.

I am 99.999 % sure they are the same. The steering wheel is the same too.
Grant has had aplications wrong in the past. I would order one, which ever one you want, heads or tails... and if it's wrong, order the other one upon returning the first one. Maybe an e-mail to grant may be in order once you figure it out.

Re: How to ID Steering Column

I was just going by Grant's adapter fitment chart where it shows the 69 as the 3162 and the 70 as the 3163. I guess the only way I would now is if someone on here as ordered one or the other for either a 69 or a 70. Thanks for the responses.

I am not sure if this helps or not, but the picture of the column you have looks exactly the same except in color as the original one I am going to be replacing in my 70 Blazer.

Well I sent an email to Grant, enclosed is the response.

After speaking to our engineer, I found that the difference between the splined hubs of the #3162 and #3163 is that the 3163 has a small machined packet to clear a petrusion on the turn signal cam and the post covers are slightly different.

Thank you,

Unfortunately this doesn't help much unless I try trial and error. Can anyone confirm if they have used the 3163 adapter on a 69 even though it is for the 70, or vice versa? This isn't a matter of running down town to get the correct one as I would have to order on the internet.

Re: How to ID Steering Column

My interpretation is that the 3163 would fit either column and would accept either turn signal cam. I suspect the 3162 would fit either with the 69 turn signal cam if it will work with the switch in the 70 column.

I bought an adapter for a 71 model and have put the same wheel on a 69 column without the cap. The cap may either have too much gap or have interference (trim it) but the adapter should still function.

I guess the answer to your original question is to look for the protrusion on the turn signal cam and go from there.

Do you still have the other steering column too?

I just have the one that came with it from the PO. I didn't ask if the column was changed with the new cab. I think I am going with the 3163 and go from there as I have a couple of caps and horn buttons and actually just need the adapter itself and not the kit.
