Need info on electric fans - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I need some help with putting electric fans on my 84 GMC. What I want to know is if there are premade shrouds. Do I need to use the fans pushing air into the engine bay or pulling it in. I also want to hear real world experiences. Any help is appreciated.

Fans pull more air than they can push, though you can get fans that work either way reasonably well.

I had a small mid 80s Nova fan combined with a 3.8L powered car fan, and found they didn't have the CFM to keep my engine cooled properly, even on a relatively chilly fall day.

There are aftermarket shrouds that you can buy that basically bolt straight in, but they are not cheap at all, this thread caught my attention, and once I find a fan shroud for my 80, I'll be checking to see if it'll fit our newer trucks

Another cheap option is a set of fans from a 95+ Ford Windstar, or similar year Taurus. Both are dual fan / dual speed configurations in a shroud that nearly is a perfect fit for our radiators, just need to trim a touch for the upper / lower rad hoses, and trans cooler lines if so equipped. Both fan setups move a huge amount of air, and are cooling built big blocks in rock crawlers from the mountains to deserts

Thanks for the info. I really like the cheap option. I figured I'd need a shroud, I just want to take the easy way out. This truck has a stock 350 crate motor and the Flex fan cooled it oaky with a stock shroud. Whoever swapped from a 6 to a V-8 hacked the O.E. shroud. Since I'm putting a new engine in its time to upgrade.

That jeep fan, according to 71rat, measures out at "19. Pretty close to the opening on our trucks rad shroud too.... hmm..

Anyone got measurements for the Mark 8 fans?

ls1 dual fans..flexalite controller,misc. hardware...
about $150.

PCM cool setup. Does that push enough air to keep your truck from overheating in Florida?

Dude,
these fans are like two little helicopters, they pull some serious air!
I can cruise around with 100+ degree temps outside, and have no problems at all. For the $, I would recommend them to anyone.
