options?

Hey guys, do any of you know where I can find some production numbers.
I have a 1970 swb 2wd with bucket seats, th400, and the original 396/402 engine. I was wondering how I could find out how many trucks came equipped like this.

Also I'm curious about the engine. The truck has 396 c.i. engine listed on the glove box door but under the hood on the radiator support it says 402 c.i. 350 hp. Was the 350hp engine a regular option or was this some sort of special order? The engine is original to the truck. The VIN is stamped on the pad in front of the head.

Re: options?

The old 396 or 402 story.

The way I remember hearing it is that Chevrolet put a bunch of money into marketing the 396 SS option on cars such as Chevelle's and Camaro's. Then they punched out the 396 to 402, and did not want to loose the reputation they had built around the 396 so the marketing stayed as 396.

Does it have fender emblems that say "400"? A lot did!

Re: options?

after the begining of the 70 model year, there were NO 396 engines installed in anything on the assembly line. Many were badged as so, but it simply didn't happen. After '70, the trucks for 400 badges, for the 402 engione, and many were optioned as 396. Totally stupid, but that's how it is.
You won't find production numbers on options.... there's %'s listed on some options, but the acuracy is questionable.

Re: options?

I thought the 402 BB were rated at 310hp according to the brochures. I did not realize their was an option for more HP other than the 310hp?

Re: options?

My engine question wasn't 402 or 396. I know it is a 402. My question was the 350 hp rating of the engine. Was this a regular option or was it some kind of special order? Look about 2/3 of the way down the second pic and you will see where it says 402 cu in 350hp

Re: options?

Could it be that the sticker is generic, relative to the big block? GM hadn't yet gotten engine-specific at that time, and I believe that the engine, in a 350-horse guise, was in the El Camino....a truck. The sticker would have gone on any light truck, regardless of the series....C-10 or El Camino....to address that size engine.

But it is an interesting question.

Re: options?

That is a very good observation. The factory brochure says these are rated at 310@4800 and torque is 350@3000. Am I missing something?????

Re: options?

Yeah its a little strange. The option number on the glove box door is the standard L47 but the other sticker throws me off. When I get back out to the shop I'll get the ID number off the block.
