Help needed......!
Just had the gas tank dropped, cleaned and replaced. The sending unit worked perfectly before and now reads WAAAY past full. The needle will move a little when the ignition is turned on, but its still squirrely.
If someone can post some info I'd 'preciate it. By the way, I tried search, but it isnt working.......Thanks. SLIMJIM

Make sure your tank is grounded.

Thanks jhow. I had a shop do this for me because of not having another person to help me. They said they hooked it ll back up, but....you never know. I will mention it when I take it in monday. Thanks again.

I would also look at the sending unit as the possible fault. On the unit there is a small flat lenfth of wire that can become corroded and cause the gauge to swing to the right to the bottom of the gauge. I changed my sender unit in my 70' and cured the problem.

In your case, it could be the internal sending unit as Longhorn mentioned gone bad, could be the float arm jammed up at an odd angle, or the wire, or metal cap going to it shorted to ground. Check the rubber grommets, etc. on the sending unit. They can break with age when handled...

I had exactly the same problem this past week. Following http://www.6066gmcguy.org/Electrical-02.htm, everything checked out. So, with the ignition switch in the ON position, I tapped the gauge and it dropped back down where it should be. I hope this solves my problem. Let me know if this works for you.
