these trucks have heavy beds

Well i just got done taking my bed off. I'm only 19 and not the buffest guy in the world so i got some help from my two brother in laws but even the three of us couldnt get it so we had to recrute(sp) my sister and 10 year old nephew to help. By the way my truck is a long bed. But its off now so tomorrow i'm gonna take the doors off and its time to go in to the garage and start its new life. I'm putting new drivers side floor pan, front floor brace, inner rocker, outer rocker, and inner cab roof panel. Every thing else is solid so after thats done it "should" be smooth sailing

If you had the 10-year old from the git-go, you wouldn't have needed your sister....(LOL).

I took mine a part when I took it off because it had rust that needed to be attended to. I assembled it while on the truck to make things easier too.

Re: these trucks have heavy beds

my cousin and i lifted a long step without fenders off without problem when we were sophomore/juniors in highschool. not that heavy, but we popped it off, and threw it in the back of his truck to take it out back.

on this one, i didn't even try. so. we used the tractor. manly? eh. not so much. but i wasn't tired afterwards. .

Re: these trucks have heavy beds

Lift one side of bed and put 4X4 under it one end at a time. Then the other. Then lay a long 2X4 across the frame.Using the metal brackets sold for sawhorses make up 4 upside down V's.Then one corner at a time lift the 2X4 and have the 10 YO put the sawhorse end(Upside down V) under the corner you have lifted.Roll frame out from under said bed.
Years of not having help or working alone on my junk late at night made me creative.

Re: these trucks have heavy beds

I can show you how to do it using a floor jack, a 2 foot long 4x4, 4 8 foot 2x4s, a pair of jack stands, and 2 tie down straps.
it took about 45 minutes but I didnt even break a sweat.

Re: these trucks have heavy beds

Ive always been able to move a long bed with two guys without any problems. Well I figured I could muscle off a shortbed easily buy myself. I couldn't budge it. I grabbed my son, he's a pretty strong mid 20's kid. We almost killed ourselfs but we finally got it. I had no idea the steel plate the previous owner made the bed floor out of would be so heavy (he tacked it over the original steel bed floor)....

Re: these trucks have heavy beds

i know a longhorn bed with no gate or floor is just shy of 500 pounds.
I did mine myself with no lifting tools, just a little at a time, corner by corner, propping it up as I went.
Loaded the old one on tpop of the new one by myself too... THAT was fun.

I've had to take mine off by myself a couple of times. If I never have to do that again it will be too soon.

My brother and I took the longbed on and off my '67 C-30 several times when I was mounting it. I had to add all the mounts and drill holes, so I had to mock it up a few times!

Re: these trucks have heavy beds

ever think of jacking it up and takin the tires off and setting it down on the rear axel so you dont have to lift it 2feet above the frame?? thats why i say you'll have to learn how to outthink these tricky inanimate pieces of metal

Re: these trucks have heavy beds

2 guys longbed no problem, when Im going at it alone I built bed lifter thingy that hooks to my picker then I just pick it up and roll her around takes more time to get the bolts out and disconnect wires, I use this on all my trucks, built it out of 2x4's takes 10 minutes to build

Maybe if you had taken the spare engine and the crossover tool box out first it wouldn't have been so bad.

My all in one do it yourself bed/cab/engine removal tool.

I've done them by hand, but it sure a lot easier with helpful gadgets. For me I always needed it when there was only me and getting manual labor was tough at mty odd hours.
