header and starter to much heat
Hey guys wondering what has been done about the starter and heat. I got a 454 with headers and the stock starter and everytime I go wheeling or at idle or low speeds the starter wont work. It must just get hot and not work? I was wondering what you guys have done to keep the heat away.

Re: header and starter to much heat
They make a wrap for the starter that keeps the heat off of it and they make a metal shield that will do the same. I believe you could use some 2" header wrap also. Might not look great but it would for sure help. You could also wrap the header in that area just to keep the heat away.

Re: header and starter to much heat
I got the same problem on my race truck. Lots of slow, high rpm, wheeling does it to me too. So, just the other day i took out a spare starter and a piece of cardboard and started cutting and bending till i came up with a heat shield that mounts to the 2 screws that hold the selanoid on. I traced it onto a piece of sheet metal, cut, bent, drilled, spot welded and painted with BBQ black.
It was a real pain in the a$$ putting it on. The final race of the season is this weekend, so i'll let you know how it works.

Re: header and starter to much heat
I use one of the newer style gm starters. I think about 97 and newer. Its a small permanent magnet gear reduction starter that works awsome. Its about a third of the weught, half the size, and seems about double the cranking power at half the amperage draw. They cost me $200 for a new one and the parts places.

Re: header and starter to much heat
I got a nice starter shield that's made of kevlar/fiberglass weave backed with a hightemp rubber backing. You wrap it around the starter like a blanket and it's held in with a stainless steel band. I put it on after getting my truck and never have had a problem with the starter getting hot. Even after hours of low speed mountain crawling and headers.
I don't remember the name of the company though as it was 4 years ago.

Re: header and starter to much heat
Install a F*rd solenoid or remote solenoid... when the starter and solenoid get hot, it draws more current resulting in less voltage across the solenoid coil. So the solenoid does not close the contact to the starter motor nor does it engage the pinion gear. A remote solenoid, solves the problem by applying the full battery voltage across the GM solenoid winding.
More info and a wiring diagram from a Nova page: http://www.novaresource.org/starter.htm I bought this remote solenoid for my truck: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Re: header and starter to much heat
I am thinking of just wrapping the header near the starter think that would be enough. What if I wrap the starter also?

Re: header and starter to much heat
I went to a metal shield that runs the length & height of the starter. I found this cured my starter woes.
esll.
