I experience something similar lately. I pulled into a Texaco to gas up, and I spied a '47 Cameo sitting behind the gas station. It had junk in the bed, and looked pretty straight even though it needed some serious work. All the tires were flat, and most of the window glass was gone, but it still had the Chevrolet badge on the hood.

I ran in and asked the clerk who's it was. She said the owners. I asked if he was willing to sell, and she laughed and said no way. She said about 10 people a day come in and ask to buy it, but the owner is "currently restoring" it and won't sell.

What a bunch of BullSh!t. It looks like it hasn't been touched in over a year, and that was to throw junk in the back. It's just sitting there rotting...

probably wil end up in a towing yard or similar, i bet, how much rust through on it ? big holes, little holes, only surface pitting ? just curious.. thats a damn old truck to be still sitting around anymore in this century, damnnnnnn old. i owuld bug the iss out of the owner and show him some $$ and tel him how you wil make the truck immaculate and take real good care of it and let him cruise it once or twice maybe when its done, etc, you know., try and save it before it gets wasted., once you did score the truck then you can do whatever you want with it, its yours then, hehe you oculd run into a tree if you want, at least running it would be better than just letting it sit there like that...

good luck

Yea, I hate that. It's happened to me lots of times. Found a '69 camaro in a shed once, tried to buy it, wouldn't sell. Three months later a guy I know bought it for $300.00! I would have given a lot more, but I didn't offer any cash, and he did. I always make an offer now, and it has paid off. I think some people don't want to sell simply because they don't think the stuff is worth selling for the little amount of money that it is worth to them. Did that make any sense?

How you act toward the guy your wanting to deal with makes a difference. Remember your bothering him. You can ask about it, see how long he's had it. why he bought it, what are his future plans. It may have set there for years not touched, the point is, it isn't yours. I may understand this guy, I got 16 vehicles in my yard (I live out in the middle of nowhere), but I can only drive one at a time. You think your frustrated. Somebody walks up to your house, uninvited, then tells you what you ought to be doing with your stuff. I am going off on my own little rant here cause I have been on the other side of this conversation. I ain't dope smoking old man but I ain't mister goodwrench either. What I got, I got. where do you fit in to that. I ain't scared to talk to any body about whats here. I like good coversation. I got no time for it if it's one sided. Ask yourself going in why should this guy care about what you want. Just one guys advise/opinion. dave

Well, normally I'd stay to my business, but this truck is sitting in a public place. I think he's asking for it...

Fast: plenty of surface rust, but you can see it's been painted about 5 times. I didn't get close enough to see the interior but judging by the bed I'd say it's probably trashed. Cab looks in pretty good shape though. Couple of rot-through places in the doors, and rear fenders.

I'm going to make it a habit of buying gas from that station from now on. Maybe get friendly with the guy...

Many years ago, my brother and I tried to by a '65 Mustang fastback. It was sitting in the weeds and blackberry bushes rusting away. Asked the guy if he wanted to sell it and he said he was going to restore it someday and since he was a "body man," he wasn't worried about rust. Well, I think it finally got past the point of no return and it was hauled off for junk. It worked out for the best, we bought a '68 Charger for $150, painted it and put some fake Craigars on it, and sold it two months later for $2500.

I never bother owners unless they happen to be there with the truck. I know enough people ask me about my motionless project that it used to give the wife the old "Why don't you sell and move on" ammunition.

What I do is leave a business card on the windsheild. On the back I write, "If you ever decide to sell this truck, please give me a call. I may be interested." I do this maybe ten times a year. Enough I keep a log so I know when a guy calls eight months later. I don't get mad if they don't call. When they do, I ask them if there is a time I can inspect the truck that is convenient for them. They can be there if they want or not.

Bought my last truck that way. Call came back three weeks later as the seller was an OTR driver. Have put maybe twenty feelers out since. Found some parts gold mines, but haven't gotten another truck.

interesting stuff, dross has good points, but when an old guy who cant even and doesnt drive has a vehicle rotting away in his yard and knows wil never dirve it again or do anything with it and knows it will end up in junk eventually thanks to him doesnt want to sell and make a few bucks or whateverand clean up his inside city limits yard up to reduce risk of city zoning getting on him about it, doesnt make any sense at all whatsoever. meanwhile vehicle does end up in scrap just as knew it would....

I got my last truck by doing a little investigative work. A completely straight 67 lwb stepside, this thing was in great shape, it was sitting at the service station. i went in and asked who owned it, and i talked to the guy and he said it was owned by his brother in law and that he was doing the work on it for him, so he gave me his number i called him he told me he was thinking about advertising it in a couple weeks so i offered him a price and he took it. so by doing a little work it can pay off.

When I was at my buddies place last weekend, I saw a car peeking out of a carport next door. Asked my friend about it, he said it's been there at least 6 years. The owner of the property is an old man not in good health and no one is living in this rental now. Anyhow, I checked out the car....it looks like a '57 Studebaker President 2-door station wagon ! Looks complete, no rust or body damage. even has the Studebaker dealers license plate frame! I'm trying to get it, but the old man's kids are running the property, and I guess they are a-holes, and can't get any renters to stay very long.

Reminds me of a '68 Impala SS I asked about years ago. Not for sale.... A few months later it's in the junkyard.

I did manage to get the black bucket seats, dash pad, console/shifter and a few SS emblems anyhow. Someone else got the 327, trans and windshield before I got there.

Car was awesome too. Yellow with a black vinyl top and black interior. Decent body and paint!

So just how many great oldies went out this way? I'd bet tens of thousands.

Oh no it was a '47 for sure, but I thought "Cameo" indicated that fender design that was supposed to blend in the lines of the truck with the step-side bed, and the 5 window design?!?

If not I need to brush up on my Chevy history...correct me if I'm wrong.

Sometimes situations change, and dreams fade.
I have had this 40 chevy here since I was 12, the first car I ever bought. I always dreamed of fixing it up, but now I am 29, check, 30, and it still sits there. About a million people have tried to buy it, and I always said no, but now, I am recently married, baby on the way, and now, all those old projects suddenly seem less important. Now, virtually everything I own is up for sale, and all those guys who tried to buy those cars and failed will be mad, cause they are going soon.
I will also sell the 70 CST Longhorn, I have not decided on a price, but it will be offered soon. I am going to keep the suburban, since it has no sale value, and is a mutt.
I will offer the Longhorn up here first, as soon as I get digital pictures, then it will go on ebay, then Hemmings. It is a real nice truck, the best I ever had, but life changes I guess.

My dad was interested in a 55 chevy when he was in jr high. asked the old lady about it and she said no cause one of her kids was going to restore it. never happened. one day a friend of ours was out helping his brother in law get two old cars model A fords mabye? out of a field and the owner came up to them. they didn't know who owned the field just that they had permission to get the cars. well the guy asks if they would be interested in a 55 chevy. of course he said yes. when he went to get the car come to find out it was the same one that dad looked at all those years ago. we got lucky on it cause the friend didnt have time to restore it so we ended up with it. we've had it for prolly 5 years or better and havn't touched it yet. but this summer dad is building a shop and it is the next project after we finish my truck.

Actually a "Cameo" was introduced in 55 ( second design) as a fleet side design exercise. The bed sides are fiberglass and they actually mount on to the same bed as a step side. They only produced Cameo's ( real ones, not the silly little S-10 thing GM did) from 55-mid year 58. Just until they did the steel sided fleet side beds. Just as a side note, there is an actual 55 Cameo sitting in front of a carpet place a little south of me that the guy uses for advertising....it just sits out front.....
