Wiring harnesses?

So I've only been looking in the LMC truck catalogue, so if anyone knows any better places to get them, point me in the right direction, besides 'just go to our vendors' are they better to buy the universal one from lmc, or all the repro ones separate?
and do you need the wiring diagrams?

There are companies that make direct plug wiring harness' they use the exact same plugs as the factory so they are completely plug and play. The universal wiring harness' like painless are marked on the wires and you actually have to do some cutting and crimping of wires. Either way a wiring diagram would be nice, there is a color version that is available on here so don't go and buy one from ebay.

I read about the install of the Painless kit for these trucks in Sport Truck Magazine. It looked to be an excellent kit and easy to install. All the wires are marked to where they go. The kit comes with a different fuse box and is a tad bigger than the factory one and requires some cutting but painless supplies a tape on jig that shows you where to cut.

Depends on what you want to do. If you want a complete drop in factory type harness, go to americanautowire, but it'll cost you some coin. However, they are used for OE-type restorations, & are EXACT replica's. They also have the updated fuse-block versions that uses the blade type fuses instead of the glass fuses. they also have a universal-type custom harness as well. Look up the "highway" series on that site.

I'm sure you've heard of painless wiring.
Good stuff there as well, but not as high quality IMHO as AAW. but they are very popular & you can get replacement parts & accessories all over the country at most any chain store.

Figure out what's out there, decide what you want, & go for it!! It's not fun, but it is very satisfying when you get it all to work & can say that you did it yourself.

its difficult at best trying to rewire something with out a wiring diagram if going with the factory type harness get the factory diagrams,what id suggest is going to the faq pages printing out the color charts then take them to a place like kinkos or staples and have them enlarged

i find its possible to cleanly repair and make usable about 75-85% of most harnesses resulting in clean tidy factory looking results at a fraction of the cost of replacement

We have sold both direct replacement harnesses and universal kits to member here from AAW. All have been happy with their purchase. It really depends on what you want to do with your truck. AAW is considered to be one of the best for aftermarket harnesses due to the quality of their products.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

It's doable without the diagram, but it's a lot easier with it.

Here are the pics of wiring diagram that I have found on this site. I am putting a painless wiring kit in and there is extra wires if you plan to put in power windows and a few extras. Even comes pre-wired for you speakers. The part number for the wiring kit from painless is 10206. Go to there web site and look at the pdf on the install. Hope this help. LATER

if you are doing a restoration, need to check out the M&H products from GMC Pauls, they build top quality factory replacement harnesses, not cheap, but you get what you pay for. You can get custom mods too, such as 1 wire alt. or HEI ingnition.

I also used M&H. Very nice set up. Have the internal voltage reg, HEI and all looks factory
