changing to disc brake master cylinder

Went to auto zone to get a disc brake master cylinder for my 67 4x4 disc brake conversion, I asked for a 72 master cylinder, the one I got didn't have a deep enough hole for the push rod, do I cut the push rod or is there another solution? Thanks

Re: changing to disc brake master cylinder

When I changed my 69 over, I used one from the 71 donor truck. The push rod was different. George

I also used one for a 71' but don't know if it's different from a 72' or not.

Re: changing to disc brake master cylinder

Dont cut the rod - take the Mc back and ask for a non power brake MC the hole is deeper for a manual MC - Also remember to adjust the padal to have about 1/16 inch of play so tha MC can return to its resting position or it wont bleed correctly and will push out fluid out the cover. I just went though this with my brake conversion.

Re: changing to disc brake master cylinder

Please let me know - how it works out. I had the hardest time with this conversion. All other times - with fords and dodges it went much smoother.

Good Luck - wpvtx lol

Re: changing to disc brake master cylinder

I went to the auto store and asked for a 72 mc for disc (but no power) brakes and it was the same as the one with power brakes , the rod hole was only about a 1/4" deep and i need it to be about an inch deep (I never measured it yet), I still have my non dics brake mc with power but I was told not to use this because of volume size. should I ask for a different year?

Re: changing to disc brake master cylinder

Golden,

I feel your pain - but truly the non power MC has a deeper hole about 1 inch approx. Just through my old one away so i cant take pics. Remember the auto parts stores are not all knowing - now days they rely on the computer to much. All power disks use a shorter rod between the MC and booster and the longer rod from the pedal to the booster. I would suggest going to a different auto suppier and seeing if they can get you a manual MC. They sometimes intetwine the parts number not knowing if they are interchangable.

I hope you get this figured out. I used a 72' also from auto zone

Re: changing to disc brake master cylinder

You can buy different length rods for the power vs manual MCs. Check with Classic Performance Brake parts in California.

http://www.classicperform.com/

I bought two -one long and one short - when I did a recent disc brake swap, just to make sure I had the right size one. They were $2.50 each.

Re: changing to disc brake master cylinder

i just did this on my 66 and used a 68 (non-disc) master cylinder and other than having to adjust the rod works perfect, i just put the proportional valve in line just like the disc version....brakes work perfect...

That might be the cheapiest thing on this conversion the rod. I just started a post on brake booster brackets. The guy at CPP told me they come with the power brake booster kit, for $325 + tax. He told me to buy the brackets seperate was $75 each, thats right and left. $150 for brackets, and the wrecking yards seem to only have 3/4 ton truck and those brackets are too long for my 1/2 ton.
