Installing new gas tank tomorrow. Any special tools needed?

I finally found the time to replace my leaking driver side tank. I have a new tank, straps, pump (with new harness) and strainer ready to put in. I have all the basic tools (sockets, impact, wrenches, line wrenches, yadayadayada). Are there any special tools needed for this job?

Yes there is ,you need a lot of patiience...lol...if you have basics tools you should be fine,they dont give you alot of room for doing the hoses back up though,that part really sucks

Yes you will need a few special tools, they're mostly green in color very hard to come by and easily lost. They're called federal reserve notes and you can use them to hire someone else to do the job for you.

Seriously though if you hook up the hoses & wiring before installing the tank it'll go a lot easier fo you. I found that when you take the old one down it's easier to unbolt the bracket from the frame and take it all out as a unit then swap the brackets & rock guard over to the new tank, leaving the straps a bit loose for final adjustments then slide it under the truck hook up the hoses & wiring then use a floor jack to raise the tank into position and bolt the brackets back to the frame. Remember the ground wire too. lastly hook up the vent hose then the filler neck hose. Gas it up and go!!!

Tank came out easy enough, the pump assembly came out fine, I installed a new pump and strainer, the wiring is recommended to be replaced, but the wiring looked absolutely fine and it was actually thicker guage than what was included with the carter pump . Now I'm at a snag. The actual main gas tank brackets that mount to the frame of the truck are shot. I can't even mount my new straps to the brackets because there is no where for them to go, they are completely rotted. I know these are hard to find as well. I'm going to try some scrap yards this week. Anyone have a pair of usable non-rotted brackets? Luckily, I have the passenger tank to use in the meantime.

Two minutes after I typed my last message, I was able to find a pair of good brackets for the driver's side tank swb from a Texas truck. $64 including shipping ain't too bad and I didn't have to waste my time tearing one out of another rotted out New England chevy.

While I'm waiting for the brackets. I'd like to dispose the old tank. Who would actually take something like this? Seems like scrap yards don't want them, due to fumes and safety issues. Where do you guys take your old tanks?

Flush it with water, drain it, (to get rid of any remaining fuel and fumesthen take a jigsaw and cut it in half length-wise then your local scrap metal yard should take it with no problems.
