they're great engines both in looks and power theres stuff available for them but it costs a premium expect to pay 2-3times more than comparable chevy stuff// speedway motors , vintage speed, have repop stuff original stuff shows up on ebay jalopy journal and racing junk from time to time

Re: buick 401 nailhead

Buick's 445 Wildcat engines were powerhouses in their day. They were also called "nailheads" because of the design of their valves and their positioning (not to mention the early engines had small valves).

When I was in the USAF, an SR-71 landed at our base on the island of Taiwan. The support crews were flown in. When they got ready to depart the island, I heard what sounded like a AA/FD. I found out it was the Start Cart. Someone told me that it had a pair of blown Buick engines that ran the blower used to generate enough air pressure to get the engines started on the SR-71. Never saw the cart, so it may be an urban legend. TV Tommy Ivo ran Buicks during the 50's/60's. He was one of many. They're cool-looking engines in street rods.

Kenne-Bell used to be the source for Buick stuff.

Re: buick 401 nailhead

Nailheads because of all the head bolts, too. There were a whole lot more than what overheads normally have.
