Identifying a 400 vs a 350 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

well I was told by the original owner that I had a TH400 but after getting Ron Sessions book I don't think I do. Can anyone tell me how to identify what trans I have?

A turbo 400 has the vac modulator mounted on the pass side front of trans,,,a turbo 350 has it mounted on the rear pass side of trans. Also a turbo 400 oil pan is anything but square/retangle.

thanks gordo for the quick reply...my pan is definitely square...so that must mean i have a th350...right? i couldn't find any id plates or marking on the case to positively id the trans...are there any?

what's the general opinion of the th350 vs the th400?

Here you go.

The 350 is a good tranny, and onless you are pushing gobs of h/p or torque, you should stick with it. THe 400 is bullitproof, but eats power. Some claim as little as 15 horses, others say as much as 30. Either way, 15 is enough to feel it in the seat.

th350 is good unless you have a 350+ hp engine unless you super build the th350 for the higher horse use

th350 is very tough, nothing to worry about if you take care of it, its more reliable than stock 700r4 and thm200 and thm2004r and etc etc
