rearends
hey i have been looking at others 4x4s and there rear ends are way smaller than mine even the 3/4 tons wich mine is i dont know what type it is but the housing is big and the cover is round and really stout axel tubes i know i have a dana 44 up front and i know axels really well so if yall could post some pic of your rear ends thanks

nice hew but thais not the one and cheif thats it what kind is it i know that the 20s had em in it but never seen a 4x4 with one they tend to be dana 60s thanks i will try to get pics on my photo buket page

It's probably an Eaton. The diff covers are round. This is what the front of my looks like claen up and painted titinium.

yep thats it but not sure if eatons cuz all my shop manuales say the only eatons were 1 and 2 speeds in c80s and up

I have the same rearends in both my 62 & 65 K20 with 4.56 gears. I'm wanting to switch to dana60's for posi or lockers. I'm having a hard time finding a locker for the eatons because they are 17 spline axles. Chevy used eaton alot in their 60's cars and trucks.

That particular rear-end pic is that of my customers 67 chassis bag project I am doing.
The rear-end shop told him that rearend is hard to get parts/lockers for it....so he pulled a 14-bolt from a newer truck that we will be using....that's all I can tell you about that rearend.

The highest gears I've seen for the HO72's are 4.11's, more commomly the 4.57's. That doesn't mean they didn't make higher gears, I just haven't seen them myself. I looked in my Yukon Gear catalog and they don't list any gears at all for the HO72, just install kits and such. If you're set on keeping your truck all original, you may be stuck with the low gears.
Since yours is a 4x4 have you considered switching to a Dana 60 since some of the 4x4's of that era came with D60's. That way you would be able to step up to 3.73's or even 3.54's. Also parts are more readily available.
