Choke cable kit

Just bought one for the Jimmy. It's one of those universal heavy duty one's for trucks that you find in the "HELP" section of the auto store. I have no place to really to mount the two little cable brackets that the kit came with without removing the return spring bracket, which is about the only other mounting hole.I dont have any pics, but I am mounting it to a Rochester 2GV. (Converting to manual choke.) I reamed out the choke cam hole of a holley reman and used it instead of the original one because of a breather clearance problem. I tried zip tying the choke cable housing in a few places, but it didn't work too well. Anyone got any advice? Are they just temperamental? Does the cable sleave need grease?

Thanks.

Re: Choke cable kit

those cheap cables are JUNK!!!!!

find the most expensive and largest diameter one you can get.

I fought this on a customer's 67 mustang. I went through 3 of them before the boss got me a good one. I'll have to ask him where he got it.

Re: Choke cable kit

Definitely keep us updated. I put one of those universal choke cables on my truck, and cut it to fit. It works ok, but just feels cheap. I'd rather have a nice thick one-piece inner cable that's rather rigid (rather than the cheap braided one), that way I know for sure the choke is fully open.

Re: Choke cable kit

I found this link. The same kit I bought. He says it works when you trim the cable length properly, but doesnt mention specifics.

Re: Choke cable kit

I use a fuel kill cable for a John Deer tractor
they have a really good cable & the casing has a Teflon coating on the inside, so they never rust

Just go down to your local JD house & ask them for the universal kill cable
It has a red knob with a crossed out fuel pump symbol on it, I take a scotchbrite pad or similar and buff it off

If you want I can get pics for you soon

Re: Choke cable kit

LMC lists a '67/'68 Choke Cable: p/n 30-2642. Knob is p/n 30-2640. I know LMC is mostly cheap Chinese junk now, but it will probably fit better than the other Chinese junk from the "Help" rack.

Re: Choke cable kit

Spraybomb,

Pics and a description of how you mounted it would be great. I will check into that cable.

68OS,

I will see if they have a pic of it on their site. Thanks.

Re: Choke cable kit

I'll try to get you some pics soon

I mounted it in a hole somebody had drilled it the dash, but on my dads truck we plan to find a way to use the stock knob & location

If you want to mount your choke cable in the stock location [for 67/68s], you can find a metal hole in the right spot on the dash panel behind the plastic instrument bezel. On the back side of the 69-72 bezels, there's a reinforced disc of plastic [in the right place] you could drill a 1/2" hole thru and, with a new dash knob bezel, install it in the hole. By the way, Golden State Pickup Parts lists a "Choke Name Plate", p/n: 9-L291. Not sure if they're still in business, but it's worth a shot. Maybe some of the on-board venders can reference that p/n? Then you could doctor a fake SPID sticker to specify specially ordered choke cable. JK.
Slimjim: Try using powdered graphite to lube the cable shaft. Just like a speedo cable.

Re: Choke cable kit

Just found this on the net....but it's in the UK....

http://www.nfauto.co.uk/choke_cable.htm

And I think they had them made......

Spray bomb,

If you could, get me a part number on that kill cable. I am going to try and go to the local dealer and get one.Thanks.

68OS,

I found some cable grease and will try that. It might just seep through the cable housing though. I actually asked for the graphite stuff and they were out. Thanks.

Re: Choke cable kit

I backdated my '71 Jimmy -- around 1999 when I put in a new crate motor -- with a Chevy choke cable out of a junkyard, I think. I used the method I mentioned above to mount the choke cable knob under the wiper switch. Originally the truck had a Quadrajet with the bimetal strip auto-choke. After the PO's motor lunched -- I put a Carter 9605 AFB on the new engine. Since I live in an area [mountains/ desert, etc.] where I might encounter a wide range of ambient temperatures and/or atmospheric pressure changes, I prefer the manual choke.
