idea for teenager's insurance rates, please read and tell me your thoughts

ive been thinking about this a while now.. im about to turn 15, so in about a year ill be getting my permit and needing insurance. i plan to pay for it all my self, i dont want to burden my parents with the high cost of a teenage boy driver being added to the insurance..

but, what my idea is about, do any of you think a test to determine your insurance rates would be a good idea? i think that you should have a strict test for getting insurance, and how you did on it determined your rate. and whats the chances of gettign enough people to sign a petition about this to get it done? and untill your 21, have a stricter set of rules.. screw up once, pay normal insurance rates

the reason ive been thinking about this, is the fact that boys insurance si higher then girls.. i dont believe in this one bit. i have heard though that there is a trend showing it changing where girls may have to pay more then boys in the future, which i still wouldnt believe in.. it should be equal untill you screw up.

so what is everyone elses opinions on this?

I think that no matter how many signatures you got the insurance company would say F#@K YOU. They don't care who you are or how good you drive. I am 18 and I have to pay for insurance, but its under my parents name. I just have liability on both of my trucks for now, but for liability on my 87 for 1 month was $86 under my name. Under my parents it is $41 a month. My 72 came to $56 for 6 months, but I need full coverage on that.

I think the rates are higher for boy cause they tend to take more chances........that doesnt say that girls are better drivers, but as a rule more cautious. I have a teen driver in the house on my ins,& he has to pay the premiums,& it will be that way till he is a little older(unfortunatly). Bottom line is , he is drivin a V8 CHEV powered 89 Ranger.......I was a kid once!(it was 100 yrs ago) You cant tell me he hasnt put the "peddle to the tin"

For a rough estimate of sorts, you can check out www.progressive.com OR www.esurance.com - both of which can give you online quotes..... I'm paying $17/mo for my '72, liability only - but I'm 23 w/ a multicar discount and renters insurance.... for a new driver the rates are almost always going to be outrageous! Part of growing up!

The insurance industry is out to screw everyone they possibly can.
I just got my paperwork to renew my insurance and they want a $80 increase. My new total this 6 months is 300 just for liablity for my 86 S-104x4 and my 70 GMC 2wd truck.

The biggest kick I get is that they play it both ways by charging for the vehicles and the drivers. If the vehicle is insured then it shouldnt matter who is driving it unless it is for full coverage. If the driver is insured then it shouldnt matter what vehicle it is unless it is for full coverage. but no they play it both ways to gouge the consumers for more money.

The way it should be is say for liability then a person insures himself for a set price not matter what they drive. If the people want full coverage then they insure the vehicle seperate and in addition to their own liability coverage on themselves.

There is no reason someone should have to pay liablity for two or more vehicles if they can only drive one at any given time.

As to boys insurance being higher then girls it is a scam by the insurance companies. Here the courts have ruled that insurance companies cannot charge more due to someones gender.

my dad asked his insurance co. about liability for a 71 chevy truck, they told him it was a flat rate of $32 a month, but he didnt ask if that was for everybody or if it was for his age so it will probably be alot more for me... hes 42, so...

well call me a lucky little turd then. I'm 17, I've gotten once ticket a couple months after I got my truck, but with the 454 and it had mufflers with holes in them and gettig outta school for chirstmasbreak howcould I hold back. supposed 40 in 20, lost my liscence for a month, thats one LONG month! well anyway, thats the 71 C-10, I also have a 93 Cutlass Supreme Coupe, both with full coverage, in my name but in general the ol' mans farm banket poliy gets my rates a little lower. I'm payin $92 a month total, for both vehicals with full coverage.
I should bring my truck down to liabillity, but the second I do that something will happen, I just know it.

Auto insurance is pure BS as far as i am concerned. I'm 18, and i pay $63/month on my '72. That is with a discount for taking driver's ed, and a discount for manintaining a B average at school. I was in my mom's truck (which i am also insured on), and i backed into a older lady's car in a parking lot. I paid $300 out of my pocket to fix the car instead of making the insurance pay it. My premium proably would have almost doubled if i would have had them pay it, and i would have paid the $300 in no time. Pure BS, they raise the rates whenever they want, but you dont dare make a claim.................

yall got me started

heres what gets me, ive lived in three states, when i first got my licesnce when i was fifteen in Louisiana, I paid $180 a month for liability only on my 1985 toyota p/u. i moved to NC and my rates went down signifigantly, (at the time i was 17 and paying like 80 or 90a month) when i joined the marine corps, i sold all myc ars, a few months into the fleet i went and bought a 95 wrangler. i took out full coverage with my old company (usaa) and it was only like 55 a month. i went over seas a few times and had to transfer power of attorney to my uncle, and my billing address, about 6 months ago i finally looked at it, and they had raised my rates from 55 a month to about 100, same driver no tickets, no wrecks, heck i hadnt even been driving them, just kept the insurance "in case" then i switched policies to nationwide, back down to about 360 for 6 months, this is for full on my bmw k75 bike, and my rx7, and liability on the gmc. now get this, the same company to insure the same driver in another state (az, wants $$$$$$$$$$$$$$2200 every six months, i told em to kiss my ass, ill just keep my NC residence. just venting

I just added two stepsons onto my insurance. They're 15 & 16, my carrier added them onto the policy for my 69. My liability went from $250 a year to $520. They are covered on all of our vehicles, it doesn't matter about the coverage, if the vehicle has full coverage when they drive it stays full coverage. And from my past experience, if your parents have insurance, it's cheaper to get on their policy (provided they have a good record). Just pay them the difference.

A little FYI from a older member. Until you guys turn 25 and/or get married, your rates will always be "high". Try to get a policy with the same company your parents use because they will typically give you a muliti car discount. When/if you get a apartment after highschool, get renters insurance through your insurance company because you'll get a multi policy discount. The best thing you can do to get/keep decent rates is to keep your driving record clean.

HJ, you don't spose AZ rates are because of claims problems with the uninsured, illegal, drivers here or anything, do you? We just keep paying for those that won't accept responsibility for what they do. It's a wonderful world!

No. Insurance companies only hold tickets and/or accidents against you if they have happened within the past 3 years. Anything older than 3 years cannot be held against you or affect your rates in a negative way.

Get this,

I am 23 and single and I use to pay 75 a month for my only vehical (1970 scout) when I bought my truck my rates went down 50 a month for two cars and I also opted for the optional "uninsured motorist coverage"

My insurance droped 25 a month when I added a vehical!!!

These companys are so screwed up they don't know their a$$ from their arm pitt.

My new plan: Keep buying trucks untill insurance is free.

Pete

Insurance is a big gripe to all of us. The biggest reason is that it is manditory, yet the rates are set arbitrarily. Insurance companies dictate aspects of your life to you, whether you know it or not. They set limits on who can drive, what medical treatment you get, and many other things. If you are poor, your life feels like it is run by insurance executives.
I hate insurance companies. Hate them. I have to say as I grow older, I only hope that someday enough people like me will hold high enough offices in politics to totally reform the insurance industry. When insurance companies lose money on wall street through bad investments, WE pay for their gambling losses. Call me liberal if you want, but I all for huge and massive regulation and oversite of the insurance industry. If I took what I have paid in insurance premiums, and saved it all in a big account, then I could easily pay my own damages, even in a my fault accident and lawsuit. Insurance rates did not drop for me until I was 28, and then only dropped slightly. All those people who say to new drivers that insurance rates will drop are lying. I never had an accident ever, never got a speeding ticket, and was still paying 700 a year in liability insurance on a 70 chevy pickup. I got married, and you know what? My insurance rates on my truck didnt move. My home insurance went up. If my house ever burns down, I would still never get a return on my money. I hate them.
That is my 14 year pent up rant. See me again in 2018 for my next rant.

JKU - You hit the nail on the head. One thing that I just learned was that the big insurance companies are now buying insurance to cover their losses. Add that onto their lousy investment schemes, and they are a certain recipe for disaster. The Harvard MBA's are taking over.

not so sure on the three years, although thats how its supposed to go. my bro had a 83 Z/28, got one speeding and once wreckless driving, they were like a year apart, 2 months before 3 years on the second ticket American Family called our local agent and told her she should drop him because of his Two tickets. she's good to us though and she argued wiht the head guys at Am. Fam. and they didn't drop, but the first ticket shouldn't have been known by them if they drop them after 3...

Have any of you noticed how much insurance went up after 9/11/01. My Auto, home, and insurance for my business went up. My insurance on my business almost doubled. A friend of mine owns a restaurant and his more than doubled.

If your insurance company gives you no discounts for marriage or multi-vehicle, get another company (unless your state rules prevent them from doing so).

ALL insurance went up after 9/11: our "hometown" (St. Louis) steam engine just got parked permanently because liability rates for personal injury QUINtupled.

My State Farm rates doubled when I moved from KS back to MO. I was married at the time (still am); current liability on the '69: about $175/6 mos (I'm 38). full coverage on the wife's '91 S-10 Blazer: $285/6mos. No tickets for 10 years; no claims for or against me in 9 years.

My liability insurance (with uninsured and a few other things) went up to $159 a half, from about $135, on my '72.
My '99 Ranger went up about $60 a year to almost $300 a half.

jku72...My insurance dropped when I turned 21 and again at 25, not much but it did drop.

State Farm has always been good to me. I've had a few speeding tickets and a few claims (not my fault) with no major rate increases.

Just put it under your parent's insurance and pay them, it's cheaper for me that way.
