factory intake or edel. performer for MPG

i will soon be putting a summit cam (.420/.442) and intake on goodwrench 350 i have. the engine will be going into a 78 swb chevy sport van with 2.73 gears. the engine will be built for good gas milage. what intake would be better for the job: cast iron (non EGR) factory 4bbl intake or a edlebrock performer. other that weight difference which is better? ive seen crate 350 buildups and they say that the iron one makes more low end torque and the perfomer makes more hp. granted this motor will be cruising the highway at 2000rpms, which is better for milage?

I don't think it will mater. There's advantages to each, but I don't think either will have a difference in mileage.

Re: factory intake or edel. performer for MPG

I have tried 3 different aftermarket aluminum intake manifolds on SBC with a drop in torque and a loss of 2mpg typical. I reverted back to a stock intake (either steel or aluminum) with a converter carb spacer then an edelbrock 1406 carb. That has been the best setup for toque and MPG. I also tried a set of hooker headers and also saw an immediate loss in low end torque and a loss of MPG---went back to stock exhaust and regained the mpg and torque. Trucks like low end torque and are usually geared too low for high rpm benefit. I would opt for 307 or 340-350 gear ratio for best results.

I dont know how it is in texas but in cali theres hundreds of stock aluminum manifolds at the junkyards that what I would use for best economy and to save a little weight, I used the same cam your gonna use on my 305 in my malibu before I swapped out to a 350 with the edelbrock performer manifold and I actually gained low end torque, and mpg that car also had 2.73 gears ran great as a low rpm cruiser.

Spread-bores(Q-jet)get best mileage and if you`re not going for high performance, real high, the stock intake will do best. You can spend $150 more on gas, too.
