1970 400 original engine question
Hello everyone! I am getting ready to drop a small block in my 70 longhorn and I have a quick question for all of you. I have had many 69-72 chevy trucks, and I haven't seen many 400 small blocks in them. So my question is, did gm install the 400 sbc in a Longhorn type truck, or was it a 402 bbc? I know they never produced a bbc 4x4 as far as I have ever seen but am not sure about this one. This truck also has the newer style engine mounts like the 73 up trucks use, clam shell type, and not the one bolt through the crossmember like most of them had. The guy I baught the truck from said it was a sbc truck originally but I am just curious. Thanks Ryan.

Re: 1970 400 original engine question
Im not sure if they were ever in the 70-72 trucks but the first year the SB 400 was offered was in 1970 so I guess it would be possible.

Re: 1970 400 original engine question
No 400 small blocks where used in 67-72 trucks that I know of. This engine was put in Caprices, Montes, Chevelles and many station wagons. The truck 400 is actually 402 BB which is actually a bored 396 BB. Confused yet? Also, no BB were ever installed from the factory into 4x4's. GM moved the engine/trans rearward to clear the front diff so that left no room for the wide BB at the firewall.

Re: 1970 400 original engine question
I knew they called the 402 bbc a 400 but wasn't sure about the small block 400 being in them. Thanks for the info.

I am pretty sure the 400 small block was not produced until the next generation body style.
